garyprimer - empathy: the projection of one's own personality into the personality of another in order to understand him better: ability to share in another's emotions or feelings.
Guess it depends on the glasses you're wearing when you read another person's post.

I hear Stan Milam is retiring (or at least leaving his radio show) ... seems a good fit for you - and I would think the blogs would be a plus factor for that job.

Well said. That person got a bit "too" into those books. One can only hope it could be replaced with budget concerns. You touch on perhaps an even bigger problem of complete theft of an entire item from the JPL collection. These unknown (sometimes known -- you know who you are!) people are not only stealing from JPL...they are stealing from the whole community. Shame on all of them! I promote public floggings of these criminals...JK.

I do not profess to be an expert on restaurants, but an establishment such as BW3’s is more or less a sports bar and I am not against going there to view a game with pals or family. Take their TV’s away and you might as well go to a Sizzler. In fact, I saw a Badgers game there with my kids & had a great time with them and had fun explaining the football game & rules -- the place was electric & exciting with cheering fans. If you want silence -- not the place for you.
Again, regardless my point is put the DS down, stop texting & taking calls at restaurants. Technology is here to stay and resistance is futile but make the right choices as to when to use it.

While I have not read the book I truly appreciate your comments on technology today. My generation had the Atari 2600 (mine was the Sears knock-off model – darn thing still works). I spent hours in isolation. I recall a brother of a close friend of mine looking so pale that I was sure he had not been outside all summer after getting what was a new game system (ColecoVision).
That being said, I can’t stand kids with their DS game systems at the table in restaurants. Further, I was with my family at Buffalo Wild Wings last night & saw several families allowing their children to play some new rental table game system which basically took up the kid’s entire dining area & also caused them to completely fail to interact with the rest of their family. Why not just play Buzztime together if you need to play?
Yes, my wife gave me the gift of not knowing how to get anyplace with my GPS unit a few years ago, but I also use my Garmin units for Geocaching. (See Geocaching.com) Perhaps getting the family all out together and interacting using technology is the key. The internet…a blessing & a curse. I need to go…I’m getting a message from The Borg Collective…

I've never understood the draw of the gangster look. They just look like slobs. The grumpy old man/Dad in me agrees with you here and on the dress of the young ladies out there. Have some respect for yourselves girls.

Once you're 18 you're either going to be a good student and the Skip Day really makes no difference long-term (as long as you're not out getting drunk somewhere acting stupid), or you've already dropped out (mentally or physically) and don't care much for the whole education thing, or xyz... so Skip Day also doesn't really matter. What's funny is that some parents still want to have control over their adult children's choices. By 18, they're basically who they're going to be and they should get to make the calls. They can (should) ask for advice (which is given freely) but they need to decide if they RISK IT ALL and SKIP a day - or if they go to class. No biggie. My brother was in the class where the kid scammed everyone and took the money and ran ... I believe, if it's the same guy, he did some time (for unrelated criminal activity that he did not get away with) So, for him, Skip Day was just the beginning of a life of crime ... so maybe Skip Day does matter!

Yeah, I hear you - iamLEGALcit - and I don't disagree w/ the fact that people SHOULD apply to come into the country legally. Agreed. What I react to is the message of hate/violence that seems to be the first reaction of many citizens. None of us would be proud to live in a country where you detain/deport first and ask questions later. Where/what happened to our compassion? I do not like debates that turn into rhetoric of hate. Our borders need to be maintained - no question of that - and not living in AZ, we do not know what day to day life is like - clearly people are scared and concerned that illegal aliens are destroying their way of life - I just happen to believe that hate/fear are gut reactions and not the *best* solution. Why aren't we more concerned with our border to the North? Lots of illegal stuff crosses that side, too - could it be that the folks doing it look a bit more like "Americans." Hmmm.... something isn't right about that... the AZ situation just reeks of racism - and we MUST avoid that at all costs.

Hey imaLegalCit ... do you seriously want the U.S. to use the same rule book as the countries you listed? Seriously? Because I'm pretty certain that any person even voicing an opinion in those countries is likely to be dragged off and never heard from again. Here's the thing - do you think that people are clamoring to get into the countries you mentioned? Do you understand WHY and WHAT might prompt a family w/ children to risk everything to TRY to come to the U.S. to live? Do you think that people from other countries love their children so much that they are willing to risk it all to find a better life?
Drug smugglers and violent people do not belong here = but the majority of the people we're talking about are just looking for a better life - just like my great great grandparents did - and just like your people probably did. Is it a mess - no doubt about that - but it seems that racial tensions are running much higher since the last election. Do you think that ethnocentrism is taking over? I hope not. Fear breeds bad stuff.

Becky, good job!! - you're letting him grow up. I have quite a few friends who are in constant contact w/ their "adult" kids -- like 5, 6, or more calls per day & constant texting ...I don't know ... but the constant contact seems unhealthy to me -- like the kid can't make his/her own decisions, or the parent can't trust him/her to make them... ???
