People interested in helping the Calvillo family can contribute to the Calvillo Memorial Fund, c/0 Fort Community Credit Union, 800 Madison Avenue, Fort Atkinson, WI 53538. The community really turned out at the visitation last night. It was scheduled from 4-8 p.m., and the parking lot was still packed at 9:30 p.m. People waited for hours to pay their respects. Thanks Gazette for all the coverage. Now is the time to contact your elected representatives to make your feelings heard about our liberal DUI laws! Do it!!!

I moved back to Wisconsin after being away for many years, and the "culture of drinking" has not changed. Adults still brag about weekend parties, and recall fondly the drunken capers of their youth. Grow up people. The TV reported that the driver is in jail, so the reference to alcohol must have some validity. How many times have I read in the paper, 5th OWI, 7th DUI, etc. Why are these people still on the streets? How about the FIRST DUI conviction is a felony? How about you lose your license for TEN years-Walk, Bike or pay for taxis. We know the FIRST offense is RARELY the first time DUI. Almost HALF of all injury accidents in WI involve alcohol. We all pay for this, financially, emotionally, and physically. I was shocked when I moved back to a small town, and my insurance rates were the same as when I lived in a city of over 3 million people. Deer and alcohol seem to be the factors. Three times convicted, you lose your license forever. Feel free to drink, but don't get behind the wheel! There should be jail time for each offense. Can you imagine if I shot someone on 4 different occassions, and was still being charged with misdemeanors? ( believe it is 5 times in WI before it's a felony). DUI is assualt with a deadly weapon! And yes, it has touched my family personally. Family members have died as direct result of alcohol, 1 as a pedestrian, and one who was a driver of the car, and his passenger died. I have felt it from both sides, and my heart goes out to both of these families. I do not call it an accident- It was failure to plan ahead for a ride home, and failure to curb the alcohol intake. Hitting a deer is usually an "accident".(Cruel snowmobilers excepted!) Killing 2 people is Vehicular Manslaughter. My prayers go out to both families-Both will be impacted forever.
