On UW-W student questions on-campus grocery prices

Posted on November 6 at 11:01 a.m. ( Suggest removal )

Gotta come to Sentry's defense here: they are some of the cleanest, most well run stores I have ever been in, with friendly employees and convenient access. They are also great corporate citizens, being very involved in the community in many ways. Maybe you think driving across town to save 30 cents on pizza is worth your while, but its not worth mine.

On Janesville School Board OKs levy on 5-4 vote

Posted on October 28 at 6:33 p.m. ( Suggest removal )

"They were not elected to represent taxpayers or to do what is right for the taxpayers, a point I think many of our school board members have forgotten." -- schoolteacher Stephanie Kortnya

Dear Ms. Kortnya: you teach in a district that has some of the highest unemployment in the nation. We are blessed to have a great school system, and I credit the teachers for that as well as the taxpayers who have stepped up and supported massive improvements that makes our district solid for years to come. Please refrain from inflammatory statements that pit taxpayer vs. child. We really aren't in the mood to hear such things.
Thank you.

On Tour shows downtown Janesville still alive and well

I too have great memories of the old downtown in its heyday-- shopping with my mom at Penney's, Sears, Bostwicks, and Murils, and going to Larry and Phil's for great ice cream and looking at the model trains....
But with the construction of the interstate system in the 50's and 60's it was the beginning of a huge shift for cities everywhere, and most downtowns changed drastically, Janesville being no exception. I think Janesville's downtown has great potential and am grateful for JPAC, the library, The Armory, the many specialty cafe's and shops, and the business community down there. We have room for a lot more improvement, and hopefully we can use the river as a great focal point in future redevelopment of our downtown.

On Is council taking right path on ice arena?

In response to ilovehockey: if the city is being asked to fund half of this project to the tune of at least $2 million, then yes the taxpayers do need to have some say about the location, no matter who is running the arena. And in regards to the point about "the east side being the most logical because of access to the interstate", I have timed the drive from the Racine street exit to the sports complex, and to the current location downtown. The difference is 3 minutes. Is the suggestion teams won't come to tournaments because of an extra 3 minute drive?
I will concede that the east side location will be more "shovel ready" in terms of space and utilities. However, an investment this size by taxpayers needs to benefit the whole city. We need to draw traffic into the city, not just the outskirts. If the Jets are a success, and I hope they are, wouldn't it be a boon to the downtown or west side and perhaps spur new additional development in areas that badly need it?

On 'No red flag' was seen in Edgerton PTA theft

Based on the fact that the woman in Walworth county got literally a few months in jail after she stole ONE MILLION DOLLARS from a business, and the women in Milton who stole from the schools got basic slaps on the wrist, this woman will likely get a minor citation. I know, Janesvillean, these are non-violent crimes... we can't be putting these poor souls in prison, now can we?

On Janesville worked hard on K-12 public education funding reform!

Great post John. Sometimes the lack of simple common sense in Madison frightens me.
And I too would add a thank you to our school board members who serve unselfishly for no other reason than they want to make their communities better. There certainly aren't many perks for such a job.

On Health Care Reform NOW!

I'm sorry, I have to make this comment also. Your comment about losing major benefits at 65 and worrying about a health crisis really struck a nerve. My self-employed parents could only dream of having coverage as good as yours, and when they retired they did the research and bought a Medicare supplement. It wasn't a Cadilac policy but it did pretty well. You cannot tell me you don't have access to the same type of policy. Now who is using "scare tactics", talking about major health crisis wiping you out?

On Health Care Reform NOW!

John,
can you explain why we need to pass this bill in a matter of weeks without any meaningful debate or, for that matter, even reading the bill? I have real problem with people like you Stan Milam who proclaim that Paul Ryan is only using "scare tactics" when what I see is him working for our best interests by raising serious questions about many aspects of this bill. Was Paul using scare tactics by asking why would it be illegal for Assurant Health to write new policies after 2013? Assurant is in Pauls district and employs 800 people. How will they be able to stay in business if they aren't allowed to write new policies? How many people would even be aware of this if our congressman hadn't brought it up?
Health reform is coming, but why does this "plan" have to be rammed through, no debate allowed?

On What’s Alpha Company Up To?

Great forum, and I am glad to learn about how and what we can do to help. A friend of mine is being deployed next month and I am going to send him some care packages and ask him to give some to those soldiers who never seem to get any mail. Thank you Gazette for a useful blog, it is a refreshing change to see some blogs that hopefully won't be steeped in negativity and complaining, people get the wrong idea of Janesville when they read some of your regular posters that thrive on the negative. Remember, 60,000+ people live here, and the vast majority of them are good, caring people.

On Unlawful searches jeopardizing Walworth County cases

Posted on June 30 at 6:16 p.m. ( Suggest removal )

You have an officer witness a vehicle with riders with behavior consistent with known gang activity. You have bullet holes matching a gun found in said vehicle. You have vehicle not stop when sirens and lights flashing, and subsequent suspicious activity leading to a search of the vehicle uncovering the weapon.
If Michael Gibbs wants to keep criminals using deadly weapons on the streets, then perhaps it is time to recall him from the bench in the interest of public safety.
