On Parents to Delavan-Darien school officials: We’ll keep working

And Iris, though I agree with the last few sentences of your post, your attacks on Delavan are a little over the top. This isn't Somalia for pete's sake. Yes we have problems, but guess what: drugs, crime, etc are problems in other communities too. Lake Geneva, Walworth, and (gasp!) Elkhorn. Attacking Delavan like you did is not helpful.

On Parents to Delavan-Darien school officials: We’ll keep working

The purpose of this post is not to sling mud at anybody but to set the record straight from a school parents point of view. The "elephant in the room" is the deep chasm that has developed between teachers, particularly at the high school, and administration. Simply put, there are policies of this current administration that I know they believe in and mean well, but simply do not work at the high school level in regards to discipline and academics. As a result of these policies, the teachers and students are finding the learning environment more and more difficult. Meanwhile, many on the school board, who I appreciate for their willingness to serve, do not realize that THEY are the bosses of the district, not the other way around. They work for the taxpayers and the voters, not the administration. This is the reason for the resistance to the parents group, who have been called bullies and a mob.
The solution is, in my opinion, a change needs to occur at the top and it needs to occur now, not 2 years from now. There is simply too much damage done to fix it. When the finest teacher in the school reluctantly takes a job in a district 15 miles away, there needs to be some accountability. When an excellent middle school principal leaves for a job in another district despite wide support from parents and staff, there needs to be some accountability.
All of us, parents, teachers, administration, and school board members want the same thing. We want to return Delavan Darien School District to the top performing district that it was just a short time ago. It can be done.

On Can we really entice Illinois businesses here?

To answer your question yes I do think we can compete for jobs with Illinois for the first time in a long time. Taxes are still terribly high in Wisconsin but I believe will go down, spending is going to drop in Wisconsin (Illinois monstrous tax hike was accompanied by NO spending cuts), and other intangibles such as much lower workers' comp costs in Wisconsin should bode well in the coming years. Not to mention the fact that the business climate in Illinois is still incredibly corrupt- with people with the hands out all over the place expecting "theirs" just for the honor of doing business there--it makes Wisconsin look better all the time.

I would just like to add to my comment, I am not ripping on democrats in general, but I am critical of their leadership. How about more words and actions about moving us forward rather than look for controversy everywhere? Democrats may be in the minority now, but they still represent a lot of constituents in this state, and we aren't going to get out of this mess we're in ($3 billion budget hole) without a lot of work and cooperation "across the aisle".

Something I can't understand is how Graeme Zeilinski still has a job as the head of the state democratic party. The man seems to thrive on controversy, yet under his "leadership" the democrats have lost control of the senate, assembly, and governorship in one election. So he responds by going after Joe the way he did, and I find it just embarassing.

I have to respond again, JimB and others who have implied that Joe was "recruited" by the Republican party to knock off Mike Sheridan: that is so laughable because he was pretty much IGNORED by the GOP and the local media UNTIL he won the primary. From what I saw he went out and knocked on doors and talked to anyone who listened, and apparently got his message across pretty well. But go ahead and believe what you want. Someone else made this point, but it is about as loony as the birthers are on the right.

But Malky that's not what the law is, so why do you want to change it after the fact? If you are a Wisconsin resident for one year and you live in the district 10 days before taking office, you can run up in Hurley if you want to. Why do you want to restrict the voters from choosing their candidate? Its a long campaign, if everyone who voted was so worried about what side of the street his house was on they could have chosen differently.
One other thing- you imply that Joe was "chosen" by the political powers that be. That is a joke. He came out of nowhere. He campaigned very well and something must have resonated with the voters, because they voted him in, whether you like it or not.

Janesvillean I am surprised at you. Your characterization of "fudging" the law here is hardly appropriate. Joe has been up front from the day he announced his candidacy about his intentions to move to the 44th. He put his kids in school on the west side, and put his house up for sale. The arrangement he had at his brothers, whether you detractors like it or not, appears to be completely legal, as it is coming out today that the basement did have egress and smoke detectors. Moving there 10 days before the swearing in was the best for him and his family as he does not have the means to buy another home while holding his current mortage. Regardless, it is now a moot point with the news of this apartment. Do you think any ethics or accountability board would not find that Joe attempted to follow the law with his arrangement?
You say he should have just run in the 45th- well, that district comprises a slice of Janesville and a lot of Beloit and eastern Rock Co. Joe was born, raised, and worked in Janesville, and that is the area he wants to serve, because he knows it best. Charlie Knipp lived in Madison and also ran for the seat in the 44th, and it is a persons right to do that. If they convince the voters they are the best person for the job, they will get voted in.
This has been a sorry episode and Graeme Zielinski and the democratic party should be embarassed and ashamed. And as for the Channel 27 reporter who never seemed too worried about where Mike Sheridan lived, I'm sure he'll follow Joe around at night to make sure he's sleeping in the apartment, so that our democracy won't fall apart.

On City to ask to inspect lawmaker's residence

Garyprimer: "This is a serious problem that has nothing to do with politics". Oh ha ha ha ha ha ha. I'm sorry, lost my composure there for a minute. This has EVERYTHING to do with politics, and please don't pretend otherwise. The deposed democrats smell blood in the water, and they are going for the kill. Unfortunately, they are looking extremely idiotic in the process.

Many apologies to Jeff Stone. That was Jeff Wood the democrats pulled out of jail to cast the vote.
