On What's the damage, Heather

Posted on July 12 at 10:59 p.m. ( Suggest removal )

As usual I am extremely disappointed in Ms Ames's representation and reporting efforts on the agriculture and farming community. There is unbelievable crop damage in this area, and the only thing you could think to write about was your tomato's??? Your post was at 2 pm...plenty of time to hit the road and talk to an area farm or farmer affected by the storm. Your blog is a waste of time to read.

johndenver I realize you're being sarcastic, but considering the circumstances I don't think it's even an appropriate time for that. For once, lets let this forum be a way for people to post their concerns and compassion for our fellow human beings.

On When is lambing season, and where are my coworkers?

Posted on February 8 at 10:29 a.m. ( Suggest removal )

JoeSchmoo already posted one of my suggestions...A-Z Farms does have a terrific Lamb Birthing Barn event on the weekends of March 14, 21 and 28th. You'd be welcome to come visit our lamb barn, north of Janesville, but we only have 2 ewes left to lamb. There are some darn cute lambs already born though!

My other suggestion for a terrific future story would be to visit the Wisconsin Sheep & Wool Festival (WSWF) on September 9-11th at the Jefferson Fair Park. The WSWF will be celebrating it's 10th anniversary in 2011 and will have a family-fun filled weekend with Wonders of Wool classes, stock dog trials, sheep shows, the state Make it with Wool contest, birthing barns, shearing demonstrations, a fleece show and sale, a used equipment sale...just for starters! Check it out at www.wisconsinsheepandwoolfestival.com.

On When do you put a good dog down?

Posted on January 5 at 11:14 a.m. ( Suggest removal )

I don't often post, but your story brought me to tears. Four years ago I had to make the decision to put down our 17 year old cat. I'd had "Possum" longer than I'd been married and longer than I'd had my three children. She'd been my faithful companion in my single days; she greeted me every morning and every evening when I returned from work. When I had my kids, she'd join me by curling up in my lap next to their feet during late night feedings. She became their cherished pet too. As the years went by and my children grew, I knew our time with her was probably growing more limited with each year. Each year that she remained healthy we counted as a blessing and were grateful. The year she turned 17 that started to change. Like your dog, she started to eat less and less and became inactive. Our vet said it was simply old age and discouraged us from running expensive tests to determine an outcome that ultimately we wouldn't be able to change. Like you, I wanted her to die peacefully in her sleep because I'd said for years that I could never make the decision to put her down. Unfortunately, that didn't happen. I had to accept that if I truly loved her and if it was my responsibility to take care of her then it was my duty to make this decision. The morning I got up and I watched her struggling to breathe I knew she was suffering and that it was time. It was one of the hardest things I've ever had to do, but it was the last gift I could give her. Possum is buried in our back yard under a shade tree. A small iron cross marks her final resting place and reminds us of our love for her and the memories that she gave us.
