On Student safety trumped Obama speech

I wonder how many of the parents that opted their children out of President Obama's speech did so for racist reasons? Certainly, some. The SDJ just catered to their racist ways. Sad.

It is a good thing that the school leaders of today were not around during the desegregation era. We’d still be desegregating. Sometimes you just have to do what is right regardless of the threat of protest. In the 50’s & 60’s, schools leaders confronted often intense protest (often from parents) as they integrate schools. The hard thing is sometimes the right thing.

On Schools set lofty goals

Are all the goals, pragmatic goals?
For instance, do standardized scores equate to a successful school district and better students?
_______
Standardized tests scores are NOT the best indicators of success and intelligence. Lofty goals should expand beyond judging schools, teaches, principals, and students by standardized tests.

On School district's insurance costs questioned

These analogies are pointless.
-----
The point is that the School District of Janesville has the state’s largest reserve fund at over double the recommended amount ($32 million) – yet this board and administration has raised fees, cut staffing and budgets, and demanded teacher premium payments (unnecessarily damaging teacher morale).
----
This board has created crisis while pointlessly crying crisis.

On Hushing a Day of Silence

One of the best explanations of sexuality I’ve read is to consider how some people are left handed. The world of science has yet to identify a biological element for left-handedness, yet it is accepted that people are born left handed. Hence, the world of science has yet to identify a biological element for homosexuality, but it is accepted that people are born gay. The proof is in the outcome.

Continuing the analogy, some people are ambidextrous—just as some people are bi-sexual.

And furthermore, at one time in history some lefties were forced to be righties because the righties couldn’t understand a minority of people who wanted to use their left hand. Many gays, likewise, have been forced to deny their sexuality because many heterosexuals can’t understand homosexuality.

Left is Right, Right is Right. Finish the analogy yourself…

Let's quit bashing Sodemann and the Winters and thank them for bringing more attention and promotion than ever to the issue of civil rights for gays.

Just as my history teacher taught me, Birmingham was picked for the great Children's March because the civil rights' activist knew the racists would make a scene for the whole country to see. The Janesville GSA members knew they could count on self-righteous Janesvillians to bring more attention to the Day of Silence than they ever could.

Thanks again Sodemann and Winters for making noise about the Day of Silence and bringing state-wide media attention to the oppression of gay and straight Americans.

On Pay premiums? Two views

SDJ claims a surplus of only $1 million over past 10 years, then how does the district explain a reserve fund of nearly $30 million dollars (one of the largest in the state), that has nearly doubled since 2002, and is nearly twice the state average?

History and reliable information matter.

It is simplistic logic to just look at other employees and conclude it should just be the same. JEA history matters--donating act 11 money, 5 straight years savings ($8 million), high co-pays. The school district just does not have a position this round of negotiations. In falsley claiming crisis, the board is creating a crisis.

On Parker teachers protest

I realize we have to look forward on healthcare but the past must be taken into consideration. I suspect the JEA would listen if the insurance fund was dry--but the JEA has saved the SDJ nearly $8 million dollars in healthcare costs in the last 4 years. The JEA also released $1.2 million dollars 5 years ago when the fund fell short. Why then should teachers pay in more to an already overfunded insurance program that they have responsibly funded in the past?
I realize that www.supportjea.com is JEA propaganda, but at least it has some specific positions and stats that can be discussed logically.
Sadly, we hear nothing from the SDJ-except an occasional blog from rocksolid Sodemann.
