On Republican or Democrat? It’s not supposed to matter at local level

It would be nice if local newspapers were non-partisan too, especially in small cities with just one major newspaper. But if you believe that, you are living in a dream world.

On BTC proposing education center to fight 'skills gap' cited by employers

Posted on December 10 at 8:13 p.m. ( Suggest removal )

If BTC isn't in a budget crisis, it is news to students and instructors. There have been major cut backs this year. There is no money for rehiring full time instructors who were working on contracts and instead part time adjunct instructors are being hired to teach one or two classes. Programs that used to offer both classroom and on-line classes now have only the classroom option available for this coming spring semester. (So working people who want to update their skills and stay employed are out of luck.) The current plan is that summer school classes will only be offered for general ed classes (English, Math, Ethics, etc.) and none of the technical classes will be offered in summer. Students were told this past September that due to the Walker budget cuts, BTC was going to be a lot "leaner and meaner". So far that is true and quality is starting to go downhill. And area employers say they need more people with technical skills...

On Gas leak forces BTC to cancel classes

The Gazette should ask the BTC administration how many weeks students have been complaining of a gas smell and being ignored.

On State abortion numbers drop

Posted on October 7 at 9:58 p.m. ( Suggest removal )

If abortion becomes illegal or restricted in WI or the US, all that means is that poor people won't be able to get abortions unless it is in an alley or by using knitting needles or Draino. People with money will always have options. It will be 1960 all over again.

On Milton will issue tickets for dogs that bite

Posted on October 5 at 7:50 p.m. ( Suggest removal )

There is no excuse for having an untrained and unsocialized dog and then taking that dog out in public. That said, all dogs have the capacity to bite. Fortunately, most dog bites do not cause serious injury. The sad thing is that with laws like this being passed, when someone asks, "Can I pet your dog?" the answer is always going to be, "Sorry, but no."

On Is cursive writing a dying art?

Posted on September 1 at 10:46 p.m. ( Suggest removal )

I can do perfect Palmer script and never use it except for my signature. I am an excellent note-taker. Ideally, a signature should NOT be neat and easy to forge. Yes, Palmer method is useless, plain and ugly, like the Edsel of handwriting. We somehow think that Palmer script is a dying art and necessary just because *we* learned it in school. (We also learned that Pluto was a planet.)

Palmer is a "recent" method, historically speaking, introduced in 1894. The previous methods actually yielded much prettier handwriting. On the west coast, many of the schools are teaching connected italic (such as Barchowsky). It is sort of a cross between script and printing. That seems a legible and more practical approach to writing.

On Horse play: Business offers different view of Lake Geneva

The horses look very well cared for. Lake Geneva is lucky to have this business available to them.

On Cousins take top spots in fair-food-eating contest

Posted on July 30 at 9:38 a.m. ( Suggest removal )

When 1 out of 3 kids under 18 in the U.S. are overweight or obese, we need to have a competition to see who can gorge themselves the fastest on unhealthy food? I realize that this is all in the name of "fun" for the kids but there are LOTS of other ways to encourage fun and competition in healthier ways. This eating contest is both gross and depressing and sends the wrong message to kids. This is the 4H Fair and 4H is supposed to stand for head, heart, hands and HEALTH.

On As many as 350 geese to be killed in Madison parks

Posted on June 26 at 1:47 p.m. ( Suggest removal )

@Kenny: The geese are over-populated because they have are living in an artificial environment which has plentiful food and no predators. We could fence off the parks and introduce coyotes or wolves. Either way the geese die. At least this way people can enjoy the parks.

On I wish Janesville had…

A good produce market, a good butcher that also carries fresh fish (not from China), more nice, non-chain restaurants that aren't supper clubs (hate prime rib), a Panera and a Gap.
