factsplease: thanks for the link; great info to see how Wisconsin's students compares to the nation.
An FYI: not all students take the NAEP every year. The government selects certain schools and students to take the test; not even all the students in one particular grade will take the test. This is not like the WKCE, which all students in the state take each year.

Um...Joel...the district does offer cyber school. It's called the virtual academy. Kudos to any student that graduates early, but I doubt the district would receive funding for an early graduate. Perhaps these were rhetorical statements?

According to other published Gazette articles, WEAC president Mary Bell said she'd be willing to negotiate on insurance and pension benefits. The other road block that many seem to forget is Walker wants to take away all negotiating rights. I think many union members realize the economy is in the tank and sacrifices need to be made. However, all the public sees is the money side of the story. It's not always just about money.

If you would like to replace one of these "money-hungry clowns," by all means go back to college and earn that degree. It seems that there are a lot of people out there that consider teaching a profession that is easy to replace....so do it. Be a teacher. At the very least, spend some time in a classroom and see what it's like. Then when you make outrageous claims of "money-hungry clowns," you'll be doing it as an informed citizen. I'm all for people having and expressing opinions, but when you make such generalizations, it's difficult to see your point of view.

Is there a community that supports education somewhere? I'd prefer to read their newspaper and its online posters.

With $24 million in their reserves, why can the Board only use $1.1 million toward balancing the budget? Why does it need a 21% balance (of its total budget) in its reserves when districts of a similar size have 12-16% in their reserve funds?
On Taxes, class sizes on school agenda

Those are some huge numbers for elementary school. I have no idea how a teacher will be expected to adequately teach up to 25 six-year-olds, much less thirty fourth graders. Classes of 28 are tough enough in middle school.

What is the max percentage that taxes can be raised again? Based on that figure, what would be the maximum increase in taxes per $100,000 in assessed property value (I think that's how it's broken down)? Those stats might make be helpful to know and might soften the blow for taxpayers.

Your comments about the press describing parenting in one extreme or the other reminds me of the comments I read on the Gazette regarding education in Janesville!
I would have my child redo any work that isn't up to his ability-hopefully that'd instill some work ethic that would help later in his education and careers.
Sigma-what is your solution to homework? What is a better way to get kids to practice what they've learned before an assessment? I agree that homework just for homework's sake isn't a great idea, but to get rid of it completely is a bit extreme. I'm glad you were able to ace your tests, but not everyone is able to do so without a little practice.
