On Janesville City Council tackles bike tunnel again

Posted on June 24 at 3:54 p.m. ( Suggest removal )

I cannot seriously believe this issue has again resurfaced given the current state of the city. First, I agree with everyone who says that the city is at risk for a lawsuit is a bunch of hogwash. Anybody who goes after the city for such an issue in my opinion is attempting to have money make something tragic better. It's like someone prior said, it's one of two people's fault, the driver or the bicyclist/pedestrian, NOT THE CITY. Furthermore, to call drivers lazy, opinion_of_mine, is quite the bold move, I would be more than happy to ride my bicycle to work if it were feasible, however it is not, and my friend, that doesn't make me lazy and you all high and mighty for riding yours, so step down off your pedestal. Personally, I was always taught that bicyclists were to share the same rules as motorists - what ever happened to that?? There isn't going to be a good solution here folks. So...we put a tunnel in and next thing you know some innocent person gets mugged or assaulted down there and then what? This is a classic case of people not exercising common sense and good judgment. I say drop the issue - or I'll take shifts with wahoo on hand holding.

On Trial delayed in 1980 killings of Wisconsin couple

Monkey, I frown on myself for actually take the time of day to respond to your comment addressing me, however, in the future, if you are going to continue to do so, please reconsider how your choose to use your adjectives in such a manner that they make sense. It's too bad that you feel I'm missing the point, far from, I understand the scenario quite well and am choosing to remark where I feel necessary.

In regards to the death penalty and temporary relief, you are correct, hence the reason I think that when it is being considered, it should be done so carefully and with good reason. I am neither for it nor against it as each situation is unique. If you think that these families are considering the death penalty or wanting serious punishment for this serial killer is a way of dealing with personal problems, consider your statement true. The personal problem they have was the loss of a loved one caused by this guy and there is nothing that can be done through death or punishment to fill the void.

There is no punishment that will ever right such horrid wrongs. However, that being said, there is absolutely no reason that these families should have to in a sense 'get over it' as some have indicated previously. Whether or not misery is being spread should hardly be considered in these instances. Whether or not he had a poor childhood does not give anyone the right to take another's life. I disagree that anyone here is seeking revenge (princesshugs). The ultimate forgiveness was ultimately removed from the picture when the serial killer decided to flee from his actions. Had things been different decades ago, perhaps things would be different now. Take into consideration the guy has lived freely for all of these years and not giving a damn about what he's done or coming forward, so why forgive someone who doesn't want to be forgiven? That's a waste of good, honest caring. I agree with those who said excuses are being made. Certain things are inexcusable, senseless rage that leads to taking another's life is one of them. If there were a way to make him suffer until the day of his death, I would argue for that. The death penalty is too easy, he gets the needle, he dies and what does he care, really? Put him behind bars...so we have to pay for him to whittle away what years he has left? I say serve him a sentence of severe suffering, perhaps solitary confinement 24/7 would be a start. This trial should be a slam dunk but instead we push it off and push it off.

On Walworth County Fair numbers remain strong

I agree that it would be nice to have other alternative options aside from serving booze at the fair. The fair has a lot of meaning to a lot of folks and is a great environment for families and kids. I'm not going to judge or make comment of what should or shouldn't be done as it's not my 'forte' so to speak. Anyhow, here is a good recollection of the fair and just one more reason that alternatives to booze may be a good thing to be considered: http://tinyurl.com/walcofair ...good day everyone!

On City responds to plowing complaints

I agree with you shagcarpet, it's not about immediate removal - for me it's about safety, where I'm at, it does not matter who fast or slow you drive, the curves that are on the street being covered with ice is treacherous regardless of speed. Unfortunately spinmaster I'm not so concerned with my lawn, I can fix that, that's part of the seasons of Wisconsin, frustrating as it may be, but I would much rather have my lawn ripped to shreds than someone killed or injured in my front lawn due to the poor road conditions.

hey localboysince1968...nowhere did I say I was from Beloit, I live in the city of Janesville, nice try though. I too have been driving for decades in WI and have never been ditch bound or the like - that's not the issue here. If our tax money is going to Beloit, well, that's something that our city officials should be handling if there aren't enough funds for our city.

Here's a thought...plow the streets and manage your city...problem solved...no complaints. I could probably drive on any back country road in the middle of nowhere that has been blanketed with multiple feet of snow and have better road conditions than this city. Each call is logged and put on a list...woohoo! Maybe I'll sit and videotape the traffic on my street sliding and slamming into light poles and mailboxes and they can add that to their little list. I might as well just throw my tax money down the drain and save the city some time because they seem to be doing a pretty good job of it when it comes to snow management and street conditions.

On Snow plowing of residential streets planned for Monday

This is ridiculous. No, don't blame the plow drivers, you're right, they do what they are told. By none other than our city governing officials. I do wonder though as my mailbox was yesterday just hit because they have chosen to omit my street and not plow it but one time so far and the street is now a multi-block ice skating rink - what it is going to take for the city to wake up. I'm guessing that it will take a child walking to school getting hit or killed and then for the driver to be blamed because the city poorly managed their budget and spent too much time researching a tunnel under a busy road. So the city only plows 'arterial' residential streets at their convenience...I forget...can I pay my property taxes at my convenience? Because I don't live on a 'non-arterial' (translation - not EXTREMELY busy) street, I don't get plowed or treated the same? I guess it is cheaper to not plow and then wait for an accident to occur and then send 4 or 5 city police, some fire and rescue workers and paramedics than it is to plow and be PROACTIVE up front...HMM?? As I said in a post on another article...these are the same brainiac governing 'folks' who will wonder why people complain about Janesville, move away, look elsewhere for schools, jobs, etc. Seriously somewhere in this city, the governing officials need to get it together - this is Wisconsin, news flash, we have snow, we need snow removal and road treatment. Ridiculous.

On None

rexkramer - you took the words right out of my mouth. What a joke. I'm so glad I give these people my tax dollars so that I can wait. And they wonder why people move out of Janesville or look elsewhere for education, services, jobs, etc. It's because of poor judgement and irrational decisions like these. How irritating. I'm not saying I could do better as a whole but there are certain things I surely wouldn't skimp on - and public safety sure seems to find a place in the top 3 if you ask me. But, hey, that's okay, let's have a bunch of accidents so that our emergency services people are busy tending to them that could have otherwise been prevented - how's that fit into the budget folks?

On Janesville cuts back snow plowing

Posted on December 8 at 11:24 a.m. ( Suggest removal )

First, I apologize. I haven't read through all of the comments yet so if I repeat, I'm sorry.
Hmm, so the city has chosen only to go through my street once since the snow and icy weather started resulting in every intersection and curve being literally a sheet of ice and has now resulted in mailboxes being hit. Next thing you know it will be a child or a person walking to school and it'll be the driver's fault because they were going too fast or something. At what point do we start to sacrifice community safety and the safety of our drivers and pedestrians in order to save money? I guess we're there...talk about a decision that makes little sense. Don't get me wrong, I know things cost money, but with all due respect, I am SURE there are other things that could get cut from spending in order to assure the safety of the city's residents. It's your job city government, make it happen, make your city desirable otherwise don't sit back and wonder why people move away when they have become fed up with what happens in it. Just Ridiculous.
