Nina- Thank you! That is exactly my very long-winded point.

Kenbjammen, you should be very concerned that your child missed class with 3 of his teachers on Friday. I know I would much prefer that my child spend his time learning from the content-specific-educated, experienced instructor rather than a sub. I know this because when I am sick for one day, this is what I face: writing sub-friendly lesson plans in a way that will inform the sub of what we have been studying, how we have been studying it, and who has been sick or absent and may need to be brought up to speed so that they do not lose another day due to MY absence. I also need to be sure to identify who needs extra attention because they struggle in my subject area, who needs to be challenged so that the day is not a waste for them, who the trouble makers are and a crash course mini-inservice on the best way to deal with them so that other students aren’t disrupted, the trouble makers are not booted from class, and the sub doesn’t have to go home at the end of the day with a migraine. Finally, I must be certain to “teach” the sub what I am teaching so that they may teach it to my kids in my absence. And yet, after all of that, I am anxious about it all as I know that in the end, I will have to reteach what it is I left for the sub to teach. This is NOT in any way to discredit subs. This is to enlighten those of you who feel teachers are whining. I don’t whine about my job. I love it. I work very hard at it. I don’t mind brining work home and I am a mother with small children and a husband at home. But, I couldn’t be an effective teacher in the slightest way if I did not do these things and I know it and accept it. However; I am tired of the bashing. Maybe not every teacher, as in any job, but MOST of us deserves a C-O-L-A. We deserve to have the decent benefits we’ve grown to very much appreciate. We chose what we do because we love it and work very hard at it. Never will we receive a monetary bonus for a job well-done; hardly ever do we get a verbal or printed thank-you. Fine. You can show us your gratitude and appreciation by seeing that your child does not miss class with his salaried teachers again. Help make this possible.

To address the assumptions of kenbjammen - You are tempted to post the names of your child's teachers that called in sick?! Seriously? Teachers, like most other employees in every other line of work, are given sick days for a reason. Who are you to assume these teachers were not sick? And, more importantly, what makes you the judge of an absolute definition of "sick"? I bet you an administrator's retirement package that many of these sick teachers were indeed quite sick. I bet they are sick each and every day. I would be too if I had to deal with a community voice that is loudest when test scores are low or salaries are being debated. If a person is sick, mentally, physically, emotionally, or spiritually, they are entitled to call in sick - if they have the days. If people like you spent half the time and energy focusing on working toward helping to find solutions to the problem rather than stirring up pep rallies to nit-pick effects of the problem, this district might already be past this.

BlackIrish - you must not have been a very attentive student...look at the name of the person whose post caddyshack243 is responding to. And to assume that the teacher is female...you know what happens when we assume.

I am sorry...being as we are teachers, I need to clarify for the common good. A lot is ALWAYS 2 words. No disrespect meant. Thank you.
