Good luck, Matt. Don't lose your inner child. I'll always remember you sitting on the floor with the kids at Janesville Community Day Care. Don't lose your inner child. It's invaluable for the profession and for your sanity.

I have known creative righties and lefties, so I'm not convinced we lefties have any special magic in the creative realm. Maybe lefties tend to be sensitive because of being "different," although any discrimination we might have endured is nothing like the intolerance directed at other groups.

Sid's an outdoors boy. Hunts the mighty deer, and, like many successfuly hunters, he honed his skills as a lad by bagging squirrels with a .22. At least, I think that's what Cathy had in mind.

Our mistake on the 92-hour thing. Here's what happened: I wrote 9 1/2 (That's nine-and-one-half) hours, but when the file was tranferred to the Web site, the software converted it to 92 hours. We should have caught it, as this is an ongoing problem. Thanks to alert reader and school board member Bill Sodemann for bringing it to our attention. --Gazette reporter Frank Schultz

Just to confirm, and as we noted on today's front page as well as in a previous story, the brick sculptures were donated by Janesville Brick & Tile and J.P. Cullen & Sons. --Gazette reporter Frank Schultz

Interesting:
By The Associated Press
MADISON, Wis. (AP) — In an Oct. 21 story about drunken driving laws, The Associated Press erroneously reported that a first offense in Wisconsin is a misdemeanor. It is a civil offense.

Sure, the Sentinel gets all kinds of attention when it writes about our drinking culture, something most attentive people have known about for decades. Where's the outrage when I write about massive numbers of Janesville high school kids who get drunk regularly, drive drunk or ride with drunken drivers? I can't begin to count the times I and other reporters on our staff have written about these statistics and the way lives are harmed -- or ended -- because of drinking.

My tips: 1) Always keep hot sauce on hand. 2)If you can fry it, you can eat it. 3) Learn how to make rice and beans. They go with anything, even if all you have is hot sauce.

OK, here's the deal: Evert's letter announcing his retirement was in the packet of materials distributed to board members and the press before each school board meeting. The packet is always distributed late Friday afternoon. I always get my packet at 4:30 p.m., and rarely a minute sooner. So the news was going to come out that day. For some reason, DuWayne Severson decided to make a formal announcement at 2 p.m.
Now, it appears that Severson and Evert had been discussing the replacement scenario for some time, while at least some other board members may have been in the dark about it. One of them said Tuesday night that he had hoped Evert would have stayed another year. Lori Stottler said Tuesday night that she was "saddened and surprised" by Evert's decision.

Since I am the one who quoted Mr. Borremans, allow me to weigh in: It's a huge, complicated world out there, and it's difficult if not impossible to keep up with everything. Bob is knowlegable about his job, but I doubt he has had much experience dealing with national news media, much less foreign news media, so I think he deserves a break. He certainly would have taken a lot of heat for granting an interview with Al Jazeera. He was bound to get slammed no matter what he decided. I think he shows a willingness to learn, however, and I don't think he has any built-in prejudice against the Middle East. I credit him for being totally up front about it, instead of hiding the facts, as a lot of other executives around here would have done (and who do on a regular basis, to cover their political posteriors). With any luck, our community leaders read the story and your comments and learned something.
