On Farewell, Roger Axtell

Roger was a class act. I looked up to him in the pursuit of my own career and was lucky to know him personally and professionally. He'll be missed.

On A week of obsessing over the weather

Beautiful Day by U2. They'll play while you tread water but that and the low sun over Lake Monona always gets me excited on Ironman day. Good luck!

On Tolls rising in Illinois

I'm all for tolls if they shift the state/fed money to cleaning up rural roads and city streets. I drive toll roads all over the country and find them to almost always be better than state roads with a lot more services (gas stations, food, etc). We have a lot of roads to maintain in the state with only 6 million residents, I'm guessing. We could use the help!

Is it another tax, sure. But, at least it taxes the people using the service...

I agree with a lot but didn't see Dave's FrostTop where autozone is I think now. I miss that place. And a stop at Mother's Ice Cream after hitting Alladin's Castle. They carried cinnamon, which is hard to find these days!

On Bank foundation donates large sum to Janesville schools foundation

Posted on June 23 at 1:31 p.m. ( Suggest removal )

Mary Willmer-Sheedy is not M&I Bank, she works there. Camilla Owens is not M&I. The foundation they help run is for Janesville schools and is not M&I. This article is about local residents trying to actually make a difference instead of just complaining. Don't get me wrong, if you don't like things, by all means, complain and fight. But, in the meantime, people like them are trying to improve the situation. Mary was obviously able to convince the bank to donate to her worthy cause and hopefully others will and the children will benefit. Can't you focus on the foundation instead of the donor? If this changes your mind about M&I, great. If not, great. Either way, the kids just got 25k and that makes it easier to convince others to donate.

On Janesville high school students walk out in protest

I just have to say that I love all of these comments saying, "don't you get it, America is broke". We passed broke years ago, we're just massively in debt now. I guess I'm glad you finally see it but have to laugh at the irony!

On Hip-hop dancers open doors at Janesville Craig

That does not look like the Craig I graduated from, and that's a good thing. Happy to see this happening in Janesville!

I agree with jayem, I was in 3rd grade but remember Reagan getting shot. But, on 1/28/86, I was in Mrs. Wilder's class at Marshall. If I remember, this happened in the morning. At lunch, they had tv's in the cafeteria. One of the few days we didn't 'walk the hall' after lunch. I don't remember anyone in the auditorium, but could have been.

On Hands-free is fine with me

If you can't talk on a hands free and still drive attentively, I question your driving abilities to begin with. Let's cut out passengers, the radio, billboards, oh and those street signs are so small, must be thousands of accidents looking for the right road. There are always distractions. Minimize them and learn how to handle them when they arise.

On Jobs are out there (just not a ton here)

I disagree that not everyone has the option to get a degree. Are there really limits, of course. But, if you want that education in this state or country, generally, you can get it.

I took out loans for undergrad and an MBA. Oh yeah, I worked during both as well. It was hard. I had friends who went to the plant or construction and showed off their Tahoe's and boats while I hoped I was making the right investment for my future. Parents and schools pounded the need for an education into our heads. It was up to us to listen.

That said, college isn't for everyone and many people are successful without it. Only you know the best path for you. But, we all have personal responsibility in choosing that path and its results.

For some, there is time to go back. For others, as pointed out already, it doesn't make sense at this point in their life. Do we blame them, no. We find a way to help them. But, please let the next generation learn from it. If they want an education, they can and should get it.
