On Janesville School Board: Raise levy 6%

Maybe the board should consider cutting some of the salaries in administration. It seems like paying these people 6-figure salaries is a bit excessive given the economic struggles in this area.
On Possible junior A hockey program worries teen ice arena users

csense - Your guess would be quite wrong. This past Friday (the one that the reporter attended) attendance was about 400. Many kids attend open skate on a weekly basis. If the hockey contract goes through, the kids will be displaced from this community center (the point of the article) and the city will lose thousands of dollars of revenue.

I am all for upgrading the ice center, it is long over due. I think it is shameful the way the previous city manager allowed recreation facilities and programs to deteriorate. It is a quality of life issue in our community. I hope the new manager sees the value of public recreation. I am not against a junior A hockey team coming here, I just think any contract with them should be carefully considered. Yes, they will pay for ice time, but the city foots the bill for upgrades, staffing, maintenance etc. The city will lose revenue from public skate and private rentals. If 100 kids come to open skate nights (which is conservative) @ $6 per kid with skate rental, that would be a loss of $9000 over the course of a season. Not to mention what is made on concessions. Also, it would displace those who are currently attending and enjoying an affordable healthy activity. The ice center is not all about hockey. Any contract entered into should be profitable for both the junior A team and the ice center.

csense - How do you know how much open skate brings in? Do you have access to attendance figures? I have been down there on Fridays and have seen them turn away kids because they have run out of skates to rent. That is a sign of a successful program.

Although this public facility is long overdue for an upgrade, the contract with this hockey league needs to be closely re-examined. How exactly does the city benefit from this? Is the league going to reimburse the city for the thousands of dollars lost from open skate on the week-ends of home games? Is the league going to help pay for maintenance or staffing? Although this possibly could be a good thing, the council needs to consider the negative aspects also. They need to remember that this is a public use facility, and it's not only about hockey.

I have had the pleasure of working with Bonnie Davis and find that she is very professional and competent. I know that she will stand up for her employees and do the right thing even though it may not be popular. For those that are no longer employees, could it be that they were not doing their jobs? jvlwkr-There are two sides to every story, could it be that you only know one of them and only choose to believe what suits you? When is it easy for anyone to stand up for what is right when so few others do? Isn't it easier to just look the other way? This has probably been very difficult for BD knowing that she would get the negative backlash like she has. Maybe all you that are critical should put yourself in her position for awhile!!

On Vendors questioning Farmers Market rejections
Posted on May 9 at 8:37 a.m. ( Suggest removal )
I am a regular at the farmers market, usually stopping there before going to Beloit, where they have much more selection and a better atmosphere. My teenagers even enjoy going to the Beloit market,(many weeks we make it a family event), but they never come to the Janesville market because it is so "lame". Bring on more vendors - more selection will draw more people, making it possible to attract more vendors...There have been many comments about the vendors that have been lost to Beloit - I wonder how many customers have been?
