On Board, residents sound off about Milton 4K proposal

I wish 4-k would have been in place three years ago. Having a child with a speech delay he did not qualify for the early childhood program because his speech delay was not severe enough. If Milton had 4-k he might have gotten the extra help he needed with pre-school along with speech therapy and not be behind in his class now. Even though early childhood programs are in place for those less fortunate and children with special needs. In these times a child with a mild to moderate speech delay gets left behind. That's where 4-k could benefit many children. We need to quit being so ingnorant when it comes to educating our children and truly look at what is best to give them the best start in school.

When I first moved to Janesville 17 years ago I thought people were rude, pushy and unfriendly. My impression was they didn't like outsiders. I learned to deal with the communities attitude. Try to be nice and smile but sooner or later "when in Rome do as the Romans." When shopping in Janesville people are ruthless and rude. It starts while trying to find a parking place. Don't let your guard down. Even my kids noticed after we moved away and returned for a visit how un-friendly and rude Janesville people were. It will take a very long time for Janesville to shed it's unfriendly personna. It's a Domino effect and the rudeness takes over everyone even if you don't want it to.
On Milton schools to consider 4K program

It is a good thing if it is done the right way. If the parents get to pick the daycare/preschool great! If the district has to assign the children, no way. We moved out of the area and into another district. Even though we filled out the registration with our choices we did not get any of them. Needless to say our child got placed into a day care site for 4-k we did not care for. We still ended up paying a private school for 4-k. The paying people keep paying!

The teachers are doing a good job and should not have to sacrifice their benefits. I had my child in Milton schools for 3 years. Those three years were positive for my child. She got the help she needed and the staff at the elementary and intermediate schools were great! Everyone needs to quit being envious of what other people have. Just because some people are bitter doesn't mean the rest should suffer. To say the district should let the teachers go and hire ones for less is ignorant. Quality of education will go down and Milton will loose it's edge on being a district with quality education and good teachers.
On School closing may only save Milton schools $181,000

Well said Carrisford. For the parents it is about quality of education and smaller classes. It is unfortunate Milton has to consider closing a school. What makes Milton appealing and a step above the rest is the smaller schools and the teachers. We moved out of the Milton school district to a larger city school district(hate it)and we would return to Milton schools in a heartbeat! Hope Milton can keep what they have.

Milton not having 4-K will not make it a less desirable school district.

If Milton is going to have 4-k they need to go about it the right direction. We relocated out of the Milton school district due to a job out of Janesville. The district we moved into(a different Wisconsin city) has 4-k and we were able to pick what site we wanted our child to attend. Then it said under the registration 4-k is not based on first come first serve. Which is really stupid. Of course our child got placed at a daycare site not the elementary school like we wanted. We wanted our child in a school setting for 4-k not a daycare. In Illinois some cities have 4 year old preschool at elementary schools only. That is fair to everyone. Making some families go to a daycare who don't want to is not right. Having the daycare sites is a cheap way to incorporate 4-k. Why even bother since some moms choose to stay at home and don't want their kids in a daycare setting. The whole 4-k thing sounds great but we ended up putting our child in a private school and paying for it because we wanted him in a school setting the same we had for our other child 4 years ago.
On Are long lawns a sign of the times in Janesville?

Wow...the city had 5 more properties to mow than last year. Nobody knows the true future of Janesville. People always want to look at the worst. Of course the Gazette does nothing but stir the pot. Too bad they wouldn't find better articles to publish. instead of making Janesville look like it's headed down the toilet. We moved out of Janesville and everytime we return to visit it is as busy as ever. If a person/family moves out of the Janesville area and it is not a suburb fueled by a major city you can see a big difference in local economy, what is lacking in the schools, little or no growth, no new housing and no jobs. GM did put a lot into the community with the wages. Janesville was able to grow within the past 15 years. Janesville offers alot for the size city that it is. Yes, it does need employment but most cities need that too. It would be awful if the city just gave up on all that it built within the years to be a city that has nothing going for itself.

People will leave IF they can find a job somewhere else. The unfortunate thing is not many jobs are out there anywhere right now. We moved just short of a year ago. As much as people hate to admit how much an influence GM was on Janesville it did help Janesville become what it is. Any other midsize city in Wisconsin has nothing. Janesville did offer more than most and being between Chicago and Madison off of I-90 is another draw. Janesville may not have much of a night life but it does offer variety in restaurants and shopping. Go north of Madison and Milwaukee and it's like your out in the middle of nowhere. Janesville offered everything a person needed and then some. I did not grow up in Janesville but lived most of my adult life there. Like someone else said it's hard to leave and I hated to leave.

On Board, residents sound off about Milton 4K proposal

I may be late to say OntheNEside, but the Milton school district did provide speech services for my three year old. He could have benefited from 4-k since they would not place him in early childhood because of the "other" that is in the program. People need to remember that their tax paying money is going to the "other" and providing a nurse for care. No one ever objects or complains about that! We were paying out of pocket for private preschool. We were NOT looking for anyone to provide or give us anything for free! We paid taxes in the school district of Milton! Nobody ever mentions all the renters who move in to use the school system and have 3+kids and pay no taxes and are using the system! Supposedly Milton is so great. That is why we moved into the district in the first place; for the schools. Obviously your children must be perfect and never need any extra help! Ignorance is bliss!
