On Albion shooting suspect held on $5,000 cash bail

wwr1961: I hope you are kidding about thinking this was a set up. I don't get all you people who think the police have nothing better to do with their time. There are many STUPID young people out there and it's possible you have just read about a group of them. If you were joking about a set up, I guess I didn't get it. Sorry.

Website could probably be down because the techs are trying to fix things from the computer virus that was reported last week.

On Kick-starting sleepy teens

Janesvillian is correct about the buss factor. We live about 3 miles out of town and the middle school/high school students in our subdivision get on a bus before 7:00 a.m. I can't imagine how hard it is for those teens to get up, showered, dressed, breakfast and to the bus stop by 6:50 a.m. or so and not miss the bus. I'm guessing their using bus time to eat breakfast and it more than likely is NOT a healthy one. I'm not looking forward to my elementary kids having to make that earlier bus as they get older.

On Craig football team escapes crash without injuries

ang1122: Is your son 18 years old yet? The way I read the story is that "minors" were not allowed to leave the scene w/o parental permission. So if he is 18, perhaps they felt he was an adult and could make the decision to leave by himself. If your son is a minor under 18, I'm very sorry that they are reporting false information and even more sorry that you were not contacted by coaches or the district as reported or that he was unable to contact you via someone's cell phone. Glad your son and all the others were uninjured.

On Police: Pursuit didn't cause motorcycle accident

Posted on September 25 at 10:18 a.m. ( Suggest removal )

Why do you think it's a cover-up? I don't live in Milton but my recollection is that it's relatively a short distance from E. High St. to Arthur Dr. on Hwy 26. For the officer to call it in, turn from High Street onto Hwy. 26 and increase speed to catch up (even with a cop car engine) to the motorcycle going 60 mph only to find the driver had crashed seems like a logical time frame to me. Sounds like the only problem here was speed and possibly alcohol. Some people around here are so "conspiracy theory" it's sad.

On Beloit Memorial Hospital undergoes expansion

Had both my children there and was 100% satisfied! My first was 20+ hours of labor with an emergency C-section. Cannot find one complaint. People joke about "hospital food", well, I'm a decent cook and I wanted to stay longer. Their food was great and someone else was preparing it other than me. :) The atmosphere was very homelike (for a hospital) and the "husband/wife" dine-together supper was my favorite both times there. The staff was very attentive and caring. My children were WELL cared for and are happy, healthy kids. I live in Janesville and have told my EMT friend that if they ever get called to our house, he knows which hospital to take my family to. THUMBS UP BELOIT!!!

On Council chooses Sedona man as likely city manager

Posted on September 18 at 9:07 a.m. ( Suggest removal )

It is important that city council reps visit Sedona to get a feel for this guy's work. You need to talk to "the person on the street", the taxpayer to get an idea about him. You can embellish a resume and if people want to get rid of you, they will give you some pretty nice references to ensure your departure. Do I think the entire council needs to go??? Absolutely NOT!

I agree with "warfdude". With today's technology and the ability to do a powerpoint presentation, you only need maybe 3 reps to go, and NO spouse or significant other. We have to be very careful on how we spend taxpayer money. Any more than 3 reps would be just more wasteful spending on the councils part.

On a side note: "Unknown", unless miracles happen and the recent presentation to GM keeps the plant open, you better change your 15 month prediction to less than 5 months. As much as I would like to see all those employees keep their jobs as long as possible, I don't foresee any more work past the Christmas holidays, as sad as that is.

On Haunted by history

With all do respect "Hannah", I read your link and do not see where it says that the Tallman House was a stop on the Underground Railroad. This is copied from your quoted site:

"Don't forget to tour the Lincoln Tallman House, a fully restored 18 th century Italianate style villa where Abraham Lincoln spent a night. The perfect complement to Janesville's historical attractions is the nearby Milton House Museum. Rich in history, the Milton House Museum is one of 12 Underground Railroad National Historic Landmarks in the U.S."

On Should Janesville’s middle and high school principals make a concerted effort to reduce the use of profanity, name-calling and amorous behavior in the hallways?

Posted on September 12 at 8:55 a.m. ( Suggest removal )

Way to go "optimism"!!! The so called consequence needs to fit the "crime" so to speak. If only more parents did this their children would learn as your child did. And also, like you said, even if you thought the "gassing" episode was the worst call you might get (and chuckled a bit), a parent must hide that, put on the serious face and nip it in the butt. There are just WAY TOO MANY disrespectful children out there and we need more parents doing EXACTLY what you did!!!

momof5: I definitely have to agree with one of your statements. In my 12 years of teaching, I can't tell you how many times parents tried to tell me (or other staff members) that we were not "allowed" to discipline their child. Teachers do not have time to call and consult with them whether Johnny should help the custodian with some simple cleaning duties in the lunchroom during his recess time, as a natural consequence, after he was caught throughing food. Teachers need to find out the facts of the incident and create a learning experience, whether it be an office visit with a suspension for a serious offense, or whether it be an in classroom consequence like a missed recess or special activity. THey need to get back to the curriculum so that the other students educational needs are not put on hold. They do not always have time to call a parent and "wait" for a return phone call, hours or days later, to see if Johnny can have a consquence or not. (And before someone jumps all over me, yes I do believe that teachers and parents need to work together. However, a parent would think I was nuts to ask them to call me before they gave a consequence at home.)

Many parents want teachers to do it all and then turn around and tie the teacher's hands behind their backs. It almost as ridiculous as me telling my husband's boss that he's not allowed to dock him pay for missing a day's work unless he consults with me on the reason why.

I believe that some of the teachers do "overlook" the language because there is not the needed administrative support. I don't know what the answer is, but I know that is does need to be dealt with in the home AND at school.
