On Jaloit/Beloiville

Steve, I find many of the previously submitted comments very interesting, and in some cases very true. As a Generation Xer, Janesville native and resident, and one who has worked in Beloit for 15 years, I'm more than qualified to speak to this issue. There is no doubt things have evolved over the years. Beloit is a much different place today than 25 years ago. W2 legislation, Ken and Diane Hendricks initiatives, and City of Beloit progressiveness have all contributed to its turnaround. To really understand the Janesville/Beloit rivalry, though, you have to go back to the early part of the 20th century and the high school football programs. That was well before two Janesville high schools. But I believe that's where the phenomenon to which you refer originated. Look it up, it's there in the history books. Many longtime Beloiters will tell you the strength of the media (and in particular the Gazette) in Janesville propelled The City of Parks to its big brother status, and for that the city animosities deepened. At one point, the communities were roughly the same size. The history of diversity, or lack thereof, is another factor that split the two - that's simply an undeniable fact, as hard as that is for some to admit or speak about today. We all know it, though, and for generations it was just the way it was. Things seemed to mushroom from there. But I agree, much has changed over the past 20 years. Today, WCLO claims itself to be "Janesville/Beloit", and that would have been unheard of years ago. Frankly, I shuddered the first time I heard it. A product of my environment? You bet. I agree pulling together is good on many respects, but I think a spirited rivalry has its merits as well. Where that line is drawn will always be debatable.

My bet is the ratio of people that are sick and tired of hearing about this issue to those that actually care about it is 20:1. It's the same old thing every year. Please stop. There are alternatives like going to surrounding communities for fireworks, Rhythm and Booms in Madison, the New Life event, or sparklers in your backyard. I get tradition and the fact people like fireworks, but the regurgitation of this issue year-after-year is too much.

bobb1951, perhaps a more-suitable punishment would be to make him watch the first half of Green Bay-Tampa Bay game. Or at the very least make him responsible for the Packers offensive line.

On Mother who taught teen son how to shoot heroin charged with his death

ImJustSayin, what's your point? That people die from drinking, too? I have news for you, heroin is illegal, alcohol is not. Granted, both are against the law for minors, but comparing beer and booze to heroin and cocaine is ludicrous. Illicit drugs are far more addictive than alcohol, and have no cultural or social value. Ten percent of drinkers become alcoholics, while up to 75 percent of regular illicit drug users become addicted. Sounds to me like you have something against drinking. Or are you somehow trying to justify drug usage? Either way, your seemingly self-righteous comparison carries little or no logical weight.

Minan, I have no doubt that's how you would use her book. Smart, successful, attractive women are entitled to their opinions as long as they're Dems, right? She'll be a force in this country for a long time, so get used to it. And, sharpen your insult crayon. In the meantime, Sarah will be rallying the troops, and laughing all the way to the bank.

On City workers 'pick up' overtime

Posted on October 7 at 4:15 p.m. ( Suggest removal )

Beyond the use of unallocated funds to pay for the city workers in this instance, the bigger question involves the process. What kind of worthless system of checks and balances is the council employing here? How is it possible that a vote on this matter can be taken, the funding rejected, and yet the event still takes place without the right people knowing about it? That's the question that should bother taxpayers the most. It appears the council is focusing on if and when the large item pickup will resume, when the real matter of how this all slipped through the cracks is what's most important. Give the citizens of Janesville some peace of mind this was an anomaly and not some kind of systemic flaw in how things are handled at City Hall.

On Board alters Janesville Chinese program

Does anyone else see the irony in making Chinese a mandatory class? I wonder if the class curriculum includes a history of the Chinese Communist regimes that have supressed its citizens for generations. Or the countless human rights violations that have occured over time. Any mention of that, Janesville School Board? "Yes", I think it's great you and your kid enjoy it, but don't ram another country's language down our throats. I think learning a foreign language is a valuable thing, but it's not for everyone. What's next, a class entitled "The Virtues of Communism"?
