I think it is a mistake to create a dirtier school system. Were there really too many custodians before? Yuck.

Interesting... It seems like the "early retirement plan" is basically a middle-aged retirement plan - this guy could end up being retired for 40 years or more.

I'm for it. Are any of the elementary schools located in higher poverty neighbors air conditioned in Janesville? Pick one school and try it there first.

The promise of merit pay is not so much that it would make existing teachers teach better (although it could) - instead, the promise of merit pay is that it could help attract better students into the teaching profession. In what other professions do more successful people not get paid more?

One safety provision these parents might recommend is the requirement that a number of pools and beaches have that a parent of a child under a certain age (like 7) must be in the water with them. We have seen this requirement a few times in our visits to the Twin Cities. The lifeguard is a complement to the parent, not a substitute. Note the photo of the mom in the Palmer Park pool standing their supervising her kids

I used to attend a support group after the death of a family member, and we used to have hilarious discussions of how to thwart thieves and cemetery workers. One family was keen on permanently gluing a matchbox-type car to their son's stone and another used to buy pinwheels in large quantities because the cemetery workers would always come by in a day or two and take them away.
Actually stealing stuff is bad, though.

Talking monkey said about smoking: "Bad breath, but a mint takes care of that..."
No, actually a mint doesn't make you smell much better after smoking. You still reek of smoke - it is in your hair and on your clothes. Honestly, it is a kind of BO.
