On Janesville's Police Department continues to struggle to recruit officers of color

Posted on December 2 at 8:44 a.m. ( Suggest removal )

The headline states, "JPD is continues to struggle to recruit people of color." After reading this story a second time, the headline even seems to that out of prejudice and discrimination "People of color" shouldn't have been implied. In addition, I don't feel as though JPD struggle to recruit minorities because they don't want to. Answer me this, how can someone struggle to do something that they never wanted to do in the first place or even intended to do in the first place. Yes they probably did only have 5 African Americans that applied but how many applied last year JPD was hiring and the year before that, and the year before that? You would probably notice that African American apllicants for JPD was probably higher back then. But by JPD turning down every single African American Applicant they became discouraged to even apply and began to apply in areas where they'd at least have a chance like Beloit, Madison, Milwaukee, Kenosha, Racine etc. Police applicants know which departments they have a good chance of getting hired with. And believe me I don't even think JPD even makes the list.

Well if anyone asks me, minorities are at a disadvantage when it comes to applying for law enforcement jobs within this area. Do anyone know how many minorities Milton, Evansville, Edgerton, Rock County Sheriff Dept and even Delevan has on its force (Not including JPD)? Well the sheriff dept. has just one. And for the rest, well they have none. In my opinion, if you're an applicant and don't fit that specific department's profile, then you will not get advanced. Every department has a profile for its officers. I know of one applicant that was asked, "How do you feel being the first african american hired with our department?" What type of question is that to ask a applicant. Of course, he didn't hired. Imagine that! But the key word is "first" It's 2008, no one should be first for anything regardless of color.

bkrkim, you submitted a good post. However, every color is accepted at black colleges. And just in case you didn't know, these colleges were labeled as black colleges during the civil rights era. African Americans were not ALLOWED to go to the other colleges. These schools wasn't built yesterday and was labeled a black college today. Every organization you listed has people of every color within that organization. It's not just an all black organization.

On Should the Janesville School District hire a full-time security chief?

Once again, Janesville people hide all the problems that happen around the city. Sometimes I get the impression that some people is just blind to the fact that J'ville has problems. If j'ville didn't have problems in the schools they wouldn't be thinking about hiring security officers. I work in a school district here in wisconsin and we have both a police officer and security and it works out fine. For people that want to backlash School Security officers and say we belong in a store in wrong. You have no idea what being a School Security officer is about. But if one thing goes wrong in one of the janesville schools the first question one of you will ask is, "How come there wasn't more security or police?" You people wait for something to happen in order to change it. Some communities like beloit change things before stuff happens. I praise beloit for doing an excellent job with the security of their schools. perhaps J'ville school district or some of you that don't believe in security officer should contact them and ask them why is their security program so good.

On Sheriff: Jail expansion "suspended"

janesvillean,

Yes jail is suppose to be uncomfortable for the inmates but not the workers. All I'm saying is they should have remodeled the Unit Booths that the CO's have to set in for 8 or 12 hours. The Co's in the booths get hand me down chairs to sit in. The chairs are either slightly broken or dusty. But take a walk down the administration side of the sheriff office and see what type of chairs the Sheriff and the Cheif Deputy has. You'll think you're in the Oval Office with Bush and Cheney. T

he control booth in the Unit Booths is very much outdated and last but not least, the central control booth; the entire system is old! You can barley get any replacement parts for either.

Those are just a few areas that I feel should have been on the list to get remodeled before the Administrative Offices.

Did he say improve administrative offices? That's funny because that part was already done when he became sheriff. Especially his office and the chief deputies office. They even got brand new furniture and not that cheap stuff either. They don't give a care about the jail or its officers. I advise people to take a jail tour one day and ask to be taken to the administrative side..you'll notice its like walking into a different world. Don't let this stuff fool you. They already got some money, remodeled their side and left the jail the way it is. Now imagine if they actually got approved for the 56 million dollars, the administrative side would be a mansion and the jail would look the same as it does now. How amazing!

whybesad,

What is that comment suppose to mean? What flood is you trying to compare this too? I hope not the Katrina Flood. Because if you are, there's actually no comparsion. Yes its a shame that Janesville some of Janesville is flooded and a lot of families are being displaced (my heart goes out to them.) However, the Katrina flood affected hundreds of thousands of people, there was bodies floating in the water, Water was really deep. Another difference is the Katrina flood occured because levies broke our flood is is occuring because the Rock River is over flowing. Yes those people needed help. What if you were involved in a natural disaster wouldn't you want help. The help is there for a reason, so use it?

So please don't try and compare this flood to other cities that had floods and don't make it seem as though Janeville is better than any other city just because because the Wisconsites, "rolled up our sleeves and did what we had to do to take care of the situation." If you ask me, Janesvile knew that this was going to happen. Why didn't they aready put sandbags out and/or have them filled? Janesville and many other communities was unprepared. So please once again don't make it seem as though the city of janesvlle is higher than any othr city.

Opinionsforfree,

What are you trying to say, "Just patrol the forthward. I'm sure he will turn up there." Stop stereotyping! First of all there is hard working people in the forthward also not just people that fall in society and commit crimes. What if the person live over in rich neigborhoods like wuthering hills or something. Don't always susspect that just because a crime happened in a rough part of the city, the suspect is also from that area. People from all races, backgrounds and levels of society commit crimes.
