On GM down, but not out

Posted on March 21 at 2:46 p.m. ( Suggest removal )

The Janesville GM plant is now what is called a "brown field". the cost of the clean-up fo the site wouldn't be feasible or realistic,it will just sit there and become dust in the wind.

On Is this GM's final 'no'?

People, the Janesville plant for all practical reasons was closed 6/2/08. That is when GM officially listed the Janesville plant closed.I even had a heated arguement with a resident of Janesville that day and couldn't disclose my sources. The Janesville resident was arguing that the plant was only going to be idled for a short amount of time.I see and hear things on a daily basis about GM that most people will never see or hear about.(I won't start about how GM is wasting money hand over fist YET.) GM has alot of structural changes that have to be done, and that will take time and resources they,in reality, don't have. Cuts have to start somewhere, this time it wasn't "the other plant", it was Janesville. In my opion, when a plant closes,it basiclly kills a community.(local shops, suppliers, schools, charities, you name it)I wish it was different,I wish there was a better option for a better outcome. Who knows,I maybe in the same situation tomarrow. Until something else comes along, good luck, god's speed, and god bless.

On City grapples with possible uses of mammoth GM facility

I have a idea about how to use the old Janesville plant, turn it in to another "Autoville" like in Flint Mi. Autoville could show case no longer sceen car makes like Oldsmobie,Plymouth,LaSalle,Desoto,etc...
Autoville could also show the highs (1968) and the lows (anytime after 1974).
In Autoville, there could be rides like a rollercoaster that would be named the assembly line, and maybe one named test track(?).
Oh,and one other thing,Autoville could also show a dying breed,the U.S. autoworker.
This idea has been done before and has closed in less than 6 months, and the city got stuck with the tab for both construction and destruction of this very bad idea.

On 20 years after plant closure, Kenosha has rebuilt its economy

to Optimism:
Only 20 years? One has only look at Flint Mi to how long it can take for a city to bounce back (if ever). Flint Mi still hasn't came back from what started in 1974. Take a look at Buick City (25,000 workers at high water mark),now is a small pile of bricks and sand.Flint North (41,000 workers at high water),now 3100 and getting smaller.Flint Truck and Bus,may be closed soon.Flint South, should be close at end of 2011,and I won't even start on how many plants are closed that were AC Delco (upwards of 50,000 more workers).Kenosha has done a fine job at building a better city and industrial center. Janesville I hope takes Kenosha's lead and not Flint's lead. Flint still looks like a big almost dead city.
