On Aqua Jays might organize city's 4th of July festivities

I've grown up with having fireworks, at the river, on the 4th. I think it is important to have the fireworks on the actual holiday, and I would be sad if Janesville loses that. Is it possible for the many non-profits in this city to join together to run the fireworks? If we could get many groups together, any financial loss will be divided amongst everyone, and no one should be too badly affected by it.

On Are schools wise to teach Mandarin Chinese?

Posted on October 5 at 1:13 a.m. ( Suggest removal )

As a graduate of the Janesville school district and a college student planning on getting a degree in German, I believe foreign language is an essential part of today's education. There are a great deal of benefits to learning a second language reagardless of what that language is which have been outlined countless times before in this debate. When I saw that Janesville was looking into teaching foreign language in elementary schools, I was very pleased. I know if I had been able to start learning German sooner, I would be able to speak with the same fluency that Germans can speak English. However, I do question the decision of Chinese. I feel it would be more efficient to extend the middle and high school Spanish/German/French programs down to the elementary level.

On Craig soccer slips past Parker in nonconference opener

I was a keeper during my time at Craig, and I would say that photo 7 probably did not deserve a PK. A keeper can do almost anything on those plays, as long as he's going after the ball. Mike was going for the ball there, missed it, and the picture was taken after he failed to catch it. The play seemed completely legal to me

On Janesville digging out after snowstorm

the school district is not entirely to blame for the amount of snow days built in. From 1996 through 2006 I believe the district had a total of 2 snow days. (This is what I remember, could be a little more) There was no reason to build more into the calender. Also, the schedule is decided a few years in advance. I don' know if they can change it or not, but if they can't any changes they make won't take affect for a few more years.
