On Probation violation earns acquitted man prison time

Don't blame this on the Jury. The jury is charged with a difficult task of listening only to the facts presented in the case and deciding if there is enough evidence to prove the case beyond a reasonable doubt. Obviously, the prosecution did not prove its case to that standard. What was found in this man's home and whether or not it violated a separate probation condition was not something the jury was to consider. His probation violations only have to be proven by clear and convincing evidence, and only to a judge, not a jury. Please keep that in mind.

If you bundle yourself and your kids up well enough, then this type of weather is just another day of winter. I live in the arctic, above the arctic circle and we have air temps at -40 with windchills at -60 for one to two months at a time. Our vehicles don't work when it is that cold so we walk. Everyone walks and neither school nor work gets cancelled. If you prepare and dress well enough, there is no cause for worry when the temps get that low. I say toughen up - you still live in Wisconsin!
On Teen pleads innocent in drunken-driving death

First of all, no one pleads "innocent" as the article headline reads. The plea choices are guilty or not-guilty or no contest. Just because someone is found not-guilty does not mean they are innocent. Secondly, exercising one's right to a trial, even if "you know you are guilty" is one of those "pesky" constitutional rights that people who are not involved in the legal system claim are "cop outs". There is a reason we have constitutional rights, and if you don't like it when people exercise them, then a free democracy may not be the best choice of location for you to live in. Finally, as one reader commented, any attorney worth her salt would advise her client to plead not guilty right away. There could be lots of evidence that has yet to be discovered. I know that the presumption of innocence is a hard concept for some of you to grasp, but it is a necessary and important part of our constitution. But please, continue to exercise your constitutional right to rant about things you don't know about. You have a right to do it, and I don't question that.

I grew up in Wisconsin and thought we were a tough group. Now I live in the Arctic and realize that you're all a bunch of pansies. Snow, cold, blizzards; we work through all of it and the kids go to school in all of it. In fact, I walked to work today (about 3/4 mile) with -19 air temp and -39 windchill, and thought to myself, this isn't so bad. Toughen up people!
