On Can Evansville draw tourists?

Posted on May 3 at 9:57 a.m. ( Suggest removal )

I moved to Evansville to shorten my commute to work - like a lot of other people who work in Madison, Janesville, or Beloit. It was a favorable location and a quality school District for my children was a plus.
That said, if I didn't live in the community I am not sure there is anything in Evansville that would motivate me to visit.
Lake Leota is not the draw that its supporters believe - it is big enough to be an effective water hazard at most golf courses, but has little potential as an actual tourist attraction.
Agree 100% that it is nearly impossible to get a quality meal at any of the restaurants in town and that the property taxes are higher than one would expect.

And they will finally be able to close Newark - which should have been done at least five years ago.

On Footville students won’t be bused to Newark

Has any Board anywhere ever been more afraid to make a decision that is clearly in the best long term interest of a District?

Displaced...
2010 Fall Certification of Values
Nine municipalities
The value of property in the Town of Newark represents 28.84% of the value of all property in the Parkview District.
Not sure why that is relevant - Newark Township doesn't have any "ties" to Parkview. You infer that there is some kind of contract or written agreement between the Township and the School District that could unilaterally be broklen - there is not. The Town is simply within the District's boundaries.

On Knilans admits misspeaking during listening session

Posted on May 27 at 4:22 p.m. ( Suggest removal )

Joe Knilans is so ignorant that he does not even know that the $275 per pupil increase is the number in current law - the number was approved as part of Doyle's budget. Obviously, Walker's proposal drastically reduces what is in current law. While this year's number was $200 per student, it was set to increase to $275 next year until Walker unleashed his attack on public education. It is laughable that Knilans does not know where $275 comes from and blames the mistake on the governor's office. Anybody speaking on the topic with any knowledge of how schools are financed knows what $275 was - Knilans cannot speak intelligently on school (or state) finances. He can, however, vote exactly like the republican leadership tells him too.

Fair? Who the heck ever said life is fair?

Anybody who told you that lied to you.

On Janesville schools face a very different future

Unfortunately, enrollment is NOT the relevant number (except as it relates to class size). The important number is resident membership - a completely different number, and the one that determines state funding. Janesville's "Aid Calc FTE" was 10,530 in 2006-07 and 10,140 in 2010-11.
That is a loss of 390 kids - at $9,000 a kid we are talking about $3.5 million dollars less in aid.

That's the point - our state wants to give preferential treatment to any firm expanding or opening (or reopening) TO ADD JOBS.
Temporary jobs are better than no jobs.
