On Janesville Performing Arts Center looking to future

Posted on May 24 at 5:30 p.m. ( Suggest removal )

How about selling naming rights for the center? ie" The Corporate Name Performing Arts Center. Two benefits, 1. extra income and 2. by removing "Janesville" the center becomes more of a regional facility, diversifying it's audience ( which is a listed goal in the article )

On JPAC closer to breaking even

The JPAC Web Site is a good idea, but luvinlife is correct in that there could be some better regional promotion of events. You have to go to your audience as well as ask them to come to you.

On Parkview's history is in three communities; its future could be in one

Part of the discussion in closing Newark has to be the affect on the kids. When this was last brought up, the students from Newark would spend close to an hour on a bus to get to school in Orfordville. Not a favorable option for any parent.
Yes consolidating small classes, into fewer larger classes will save money with staff reductions. Again, is the in the best interest of the kids? It is a tough balancing act between fiscal responsibility and taking care of the students. There are no easy answers that will make everyone happy.
A thought, geographically Newark School is as close to Beloit as it is to Orfordville. how about moving just Newark into the Beloit School District?

On Auto recovery would bode well for Janesville GM facility

The reason Janesville is left on stand by is that by technically leaving the plant active, GM is not responsible for cleaning up any enviromental issues associated with closing/tearing down the building. Remember, there is 100 years of ground contamination on that site. It is cheaper to leave it vacant.
There is little chance that GM will ever come back. The sooner people realize this and can move on, the better.

On a lighter note - anyone else have the FordF150 Ad appear on the bottom of the story about GM?

On Hot debate: School cuts causing friction

DKS-Even with a May 15th notice deadline, that is still too early for a district to fully understand the ramifications of possible funding cuts. Yes, it was a positive move by the teachers. But there also needs to be an understanding of the district's position.

Also, teachers are not the only people who work beyond their contracted obligations. Personally, I am in a salaried position that often has a need for me to work beyond the typical day. That is not to say that there is no appreciation for those teachers who do go above and beyond. I just point out the fact that in all professions, you have people who do more than expected and you also have others that do just enough to get by.
It is dangerous to use anecdotal arguments to support a position. We can all find that one example to prop up our opinion on a topic.

As I said before, it would be nice to move beyond the rhetoric and collectively work on solutions that are in the best interest of the STUDENTS.
I heard a comentator on the radio today speaking about the labor agreement reached in the NFL. He stated that there was feedback from both sides regarding dissapointment in the contract, which meant that both sides compromised on an issue to reach an agreement that worked for everyone. Perhaps there is something to learn here?

The number of lay off notices is probably due to contract language that requires the district to notify all potentially affected personel by a certain date. This date is often quite early in the spring, well before the full affect of funding cuts for the following year can be established. This early date is to allow staff time to make necessary arrangements for their future. But because it is so early, the district must also hedge by putting out notices to anyone, no matter how remote the possibility, who might be laid off. If the person does not receive a notice by the required date, then there is usually nothing that can be done if the district latter determines the need to eliminate the position.
It would be nice for once to stop hearing rhetoric and instead start hearing facts and solutions or at least a willingness to work together for the betterment of the STUDENTS!!

On Food stamp use grows in Wisconsin

Be careful about using anecdotal stories of abuses to paint a broad stroke on everyone who needs to use these benefits. I work two jobs. My kids excell in school. We buy fruits and vegatables for our kids. I am required to provide documented proof of income, at least twice a year.
If you know of people abusing the system, report them. It may take a while to investigate and take action, but nothing will get done if you sit back, watch, and only complain.

On Author’s story of assault helps younger victim cope

A small correction to the story. Ms. Asplund was assaulted by a youth minister. This person, Mr. Lesser, was not a priest, but a youth minister of undisclosed denomination.

Both victims were assaulted by trusted clergy members. These types of predators are hiding in many areas.

Congratulations to both victims for their courage.
