For purposes of criminal prosecution, a 17 year old IS an adult. Anyone under 17 years-old is considered a juvenile, unless waived into adult court after initial hearings relevant to the nature of the crime(s), etc. However, a 17 year-old (or younger) is considered a juvenile if they are the VICTIM of crime.

“Drive” means the exercise of physical control over the speed and direction of a motor vehicle while it is in motion.
“Operate” means the physical manipulation or activation of any of the controls of a motor vehicle necessary to put it in MOTION.

Most squad cars have an override switch that keeps the squad running while the keys are NOT in the ignition. Although all equipment in the vehicle is still active, you cannot "drive away" because the steering wheel stays locked in the last position it was in.

As far as the suspect getting out of the squad, unless he did physical damage to the squad, the window was open, someone else let him out, or the Deputy failed to properly secure the door (which is probably NOT the case) this kid probably had some help.
On Cheap fun at the Beloit Snappers game

I have been watching single "A" minor league baseball in Beloit for the last 20 years. I support the team regardless of their affiliation and am excited every time I see a decent crowd. I really wish there was more local support for the team and would love to see them get a new stadium.
I was recently in Ft. Wayne, IN to watch the Snappers win 2 of 3 games against the first place Tin Caps. Both games that I attended were sold out (approximately 7900 tickets sold!). As stated in the article, it is a great value to have the opportunity to watch up and coming ball players in our community! I remember watching Prince Fielder, Bill Hall, Rickie Weeks, Jeff Cirillo, etc play in Beloit, and that is only recently! Now that they are affiliated with the Twins, I have even had the opportunity to meet Paul Molitor, as well as several other big league names.
If you have the chance, please come out and support our Beloit Snappers!

I have no idea where you got the idea that all Domestic Violence incidents mean "beating your wife (husband)!" If you had ANY knowledge of the law you would realize the term "Domestic" is simply an enhancer charge that is added when ANY incident occurs between people that are currently (or formerly) living together, have kids together, or have (had) a romantic relationship. There is NO indication in this report he "beat his wife." The article specifically says he was charged with Domestic/Disorderly Conduct, not Battery! Look up your statutes.
****
It's ridiculous to see how ignorant people are on these blogs. Regardless of personal opinions, the way the law works in general society is you are INNOCENT until proven GUILTY! The majority of you would prefer to hang everyone ever charged with a crime out to dry before you even know ANY of the facts! This article doesn't provide ANY facts of the incident other than Deputy Stalker was charged with Domestic/Disorderly Conduct.

Unfortunately dimentia did apparently play a role in this accident. It is believed the couple left the vehicle running by mistake, as they are both elderly, and increasingly forgetful.
This was a tragic accident, but the Police MUST investigate every death to ensure there is no other conclusion. I'm sure once the investigation is complete, the remaining details will be published.

On Teens arrested in overdose death

ACS: Your statement is true; Alex did have a choice to take the pills or dispose of them. However, you don't seem to understand why this girl is being charged. In your eyes he got what he deserved or he "did it to himself" because he did make a bad choice. The sole purpose of the Len Bias law is to deter people from selling or providing drugs to others. The law doesn't care what the supplier's intent was. If the transfer of drugs from person A (the juvenile female) to person B (Alex) results in Alex's death, she can be charged with homicide. If you don't agree, you should lobby to have the law repealed.
Also, I don't recall it stating ANYWHERE in the article Jennifer Bethel claims her son was a "victim." She knows he made a fatal error in judgement. The second paragraph implies Jennifer feels sorry for the suspects and doesn't believe they had any idea about the potential hazard of passing along or ingesting the drugs.
