On We throw away $500 of food?

Posted on January 9 at 10:07 a.m. ( Suggest removal )

Much of what is thrown into the landfill can be composted: fruits/vegetables, egg shells, coffee grounds/filters, napkins/kleenex/paper towels, tea bags, lint from dryer, pet hair, leaves - the list goes on. Once these materials are broken down, they can be worked back into the soil. I bought one @ Home Depot for around $50.

On Janesville GM assembly plant to remain on standby

Forever34 - You really need to be more convincing of your higher level of education that you profess to have over those "uneducated factory workers". I was impressed with your run on sentences, spelling of "employement" and use of the word "irregardless". There are plenty of people that have or are currently working @ GM with college degrees. One that comes to mind that many are familiar with is John Berkley - financal investor. It's always curious to me why people need to try to make themselves feel better by looking down at others.

On Demolition, construction projects popping in Janesville

GREENER, you are so right about the over abundance of cash advance stores. When I moved from Janesville last year, I remember counting 8 or 9 on Milton Ave alone. Not sure how many more in the rest of the city. I think there is a direct correlation with the economy of the community and the number of cash stores per capita. I now live in a city that has a population of 180,000 and is rated one of the top 8 cities to raise a family in the nation. I've seen 1 cash advance store here!

On Recalling Walker…at work?

I happened to be having some dental work done on the last national election day. My dentist made a very passionate comment about one of the canidates. I just thought it was very unprofessional. Also I didn't want to speak up and cause alot of stress while I was having a root canal - you are at their mercy! I just thought "I'm paying you to work on my teeth - not hear your political opinions".

On Mercy plans to build $6 million facility in Janesville

I have worked in hospitals for 22 years and here is what I have observed. During the mid 90's and early 2000's when the economy was more stable, people were working & home building was soaring the hospitals did minimal constructin/renovation. Now that the housing bubble burst, people have lost jobs and health insurance, and medicare/medicaid reimbursement is declining, the hospitals all have these multi-million dollar projects! Edgerton, Monroe & St. Mary's are building brand new hospitals. Fort Atkinson had an entire hospital renovation a few years ago and Beloit did an ER renovation. Mercy had a huge renovation for the trauma center and is continuing other projects in the hospital & @ East. I can only imagine what the Madison hospitals have done. Is this all really necessary and where does this money come from? It is not like Green/Rock county are growing metro areas. I don't see alot of people moving to this area. When other businesses are cautious about expanding and there is still such uncertainty with the job market, how is this justified? And do we really need ER facilities every 10-15 miles? If so, at what cost??

On Despite retraining, displaced workers face daunting search

I've been a RN for over 21 years and this is as tight as I've ever seen the market in hospital settings. Many nurses that have wanted to retire can't because of the economy, spouses's job loss, and lost investments. I think when they predict a shortage of nurses that they lump all different nursing care providers together (assistants, LPNs, RNs, N.P.,etc.) I really don't see a RN shortage locally, as evidenced by lack of postings, workers being asked to stay home and be on-call like they are doing at Beloit. I'm sure it is different in other areas of the country, especially in high retirement states like FL & AZ.

And good morning to you too, 2 cents, what another ray of sunshine! You misinterpreted my point, as was to be expected by the many "happy" bloggers on here. I'm not bragging that we have our cars paid off, after all they are 4 & 5 years old, they should be. Guess, they really aren't newer when I think about it, but we keep our vehicles and take care of them. If you think $140,000 is some grandiose palace, rethink it. The average price of a home in this town is $180,000-$200,000. Do I get any credit for coupon shopping or buying used clothes, or is that bragging too? My husband hasn't been there 30 years, only 13. Yes, we are very thankful for his good paying job and benefits -we never take it for granted and realize that it could all be taken away - hence why we live within our means, unlike the majority of Americans (even non-GM employees). Of course, if he would loose his job we could live on my income as a nurse, but I'm sure in your thought process ALL nurses are overpaid, lazy drug addicts because we have medication in close proximity to where we work! It's funny because we have many GM friends and when we get together no one complains about their jobs - not sure who you're hagin' with - some other uplifting, postive folks (birds of a feather...)! Of course my husband knows that there are some that drink on their lunch - he doesn't have blinders on (or bifocals as per DartPlayer07 - I still don't get that comment). But why aren't you as equally upset by all the business people that you can see on any given day downtown having their "2 Martini lunches"? After all, they're drinking on the job. I can see that some people's perception of GM employees will never change, but let me warn you, all your negative energy affects target organs and you could end up with sickness down the road. You need to go do some yoga, let go of your hostility, and thank God for what you have. There will always be people that have more, but also many that have far less than yourself. RUSerious, nice try at yet another attempt to explain things rationally to these people, but they have their "facts" and they need to hold on to that! So lets all hold hands and sing Kumbya.
