On Lots of treats, no tricks

Posted on November 2 at 11:04 a.m. ( Suggest removal )

I had 88 this year compared to 92 last year. I ran out of candy last year, so I planned for about 100 this year. So of course, I have candy left over. Which is okay, because I too buy candy that I enjoy eating.

On Have we forgotten our manners?

Posted on January 9 at 5:07 p.m. ( Suggest removal )

I was raised to always say thank you or send a thank you note when appropriate. When I graduated high school, I received scholarships for college. I sent a handwritten thank-you note out for each one I got. Just last year, 5 years after graduation, I ran into someone whose family gave me one of my scholarships. She told me how much the thank-you note meant and that she still had it tucked away somewhere. It made me happy to know that simple kindness was still appreciated and meant something. As a young man in his mid-twenties, I often hold doors open for others. It's discouraging when people just breeze through as if they expected me to do it and I sometimes wonder why I even bothered to do so. But I continue to be mindful of my manners because I know there are people out there who appreciate it.

And yes...there are still children out there who have manners. I work in schools and am always pleasantly surprised at the number of students who say "thank you" when I'm simply handing out a paper, etc. It's catchy--once one student says thank you many seem to follow suit. I always reply with a smile and a "you're welcome" to each student.

On Evil Eastsider

I have lived on the southside of town since I was born (I'm in my mid-twenties). I enjoy the southside because in my opinion, it has a more quiet atmosphere than other areas of the city. I also have family members who live nearby. Would I be opposed to living in another part of town? Not at all (once in a while it would be nice to not have to drive 15-20 minutes across town just to shop). There are definitely positives to all areas of town (close to shopping, transportation, affordability, historic charm, etc.). But for right now, I am happy right where I am on the southside.

On Should city toughen rules for historic neighborhoods?

This is a tough issue. Personally I LOVE the look, feel, and character of historic architecture. I definitely think that the city should revamp its rules. However, they shouldn't be so tough as to deter someone from buying in the historic neighborhoods. We need people to come in and perserve them to the best of their abilities--and sometimes this may mean changes to the appearance. I think it's worse when historic achitecture becomes so deteriorated/neglected that it is no longer salvagable and everything is lost versus a few details here and there.

On UPDATED: Part of Janesville under a boil-water advisory

Posted on May 8 at 11:21 p.m. ( Suggest removal )

Hopefully the children who drank water out of drinking fountains at schools in the affected area today will not get sick. I worked in an eastside school this afternoon and was not told of any E. Coli in the water alert. However, if announcements were not being made until about 3pm, then that makes sense why I was unaware of it at school this afternoon. (In fact, I didn't become aware of this until about 10:30pm, luckily I do not live in an affected area). I just hope no children get sick from drinking water at school throughout the day today.

On School programs are a Christmas tradition

Posted on December 16 at 10:37 p.m. ( Suggest removal )

I have always enjoyed watching the holiday programs that the schools put on this time of year on the local cable access channel--keeping me in the spirit of the season! With increasing demands placed upon students and teachers, I can only hope that the holiday programs are able to continue for years to come.
