Any credibility to the rumor GM is just lobbying for bigger tax breaks and incentives to bring in a new line?

Hero. I doubt a true hero would feel the need to tell everyone he/she is a hero.

"Janesville can move on from it's trashy car-plant image and grow into a city of intellectuals and individuals who can make a more positive impact on society and their neighbors"? What an arrogant cry for help. What's the matter...daddy never tell you he loved you? Some residual feelings of childhood trauma maybe?

Last class of apprentices specifically hired for line techs at Wisconsin Power and Light was in the early 90's. Now they act concerned. They've had 15 years to address the issue of not enough trained personel to do the job, but they would rather compensate their latest CEO Bill Harvey 8 million last year. They don't want to hire line tech apprentices. They want you to go to work for an outside contractor where you make 10 dollars less an hour and then hire your company to do the job that they used to pay their own employees to do.

Already politicians rallying to the cause. I hope they can bring a new product line in before the projected close. It always amazes me at how we as a community jump when GM sneezes. I'm sure we will offer them all the tax breaks and incentives in the world to keep them here, while our property taxes go up to compensate. If it wasn't for all the friends I have that work there, I would say screw it and let them go. I'm tired of hearing how the city is going to implode because of GM.
On Despite rumors, plant closing comes as shock to workers

My mother-in-law was a loan officer at a local credit union before she retired last year, she said that she would have couples come in, where both were employed at GM to get a loan to pay their mortgage, and were so in debt, that they didn't qualify for 2000 bucks. Said it happened all the time. I highly doubt it is a very large percentage of workers in that position, but makes you wonder about all the escalades and new tahoe's you see driving around town. I know it's not much comfort, but, at least they have a great benefit plan during their transition period. The guys at Gilman were just hacked loose. Good luck to all of them. BTW the father-in-law retired from GM 2 years ago, and they worked hard all their lives and saved pennies and paid cash for all the great things they have.

Seems pretty crappy to me that GM waited until after the deadline for the buyout to announce the closing....Surely more people would have taken that option if they knew what was coming. Obviously a bean counter somewhere said,"it will save us money to do it this way".

How many of the GM workers affected, live in communities other than Janesville? Will that lessen the ripple effect? How much tax does GM pay the city? I hear about the loss of tax base, but does that mean that everyone who is affected will leave their homes and the community? Property taxes aren't going down. Will those affected choose to not pay their taxes? Is that why we will be losing so much money? Will my property taxes be going up to compensate? Not being sarcastic, honestly would like to know the answers to these questions.

"schwoogie" the only reason you have a "secure" job is because of the work unions have done over the last 100 years. You don't have to be a union member to reap their benefits.

Great job. Think how beautiful he would have been if you would have waited 2 more years for a nice mature buck mount. But you just had to stick him before someone else did. Makes all us bow hunters look like morons. I know people who grew up with this guy, say he is really nice and married to a professional in town. That's great. But when he got in the stand and saw the albino buck, and the chance to harvest a buck that no one else would in a lifetime, the ethics of deer management went out the window. Killing for the sake of killing. Good Job. The DNR and the insurance companies will be proud of you.
