On Enrollment drop in Milton further dampens chance of referendum

Mespl, my math is on point. I am pointing out all of the increases in taxes. I gave you the proof you need in those links. There is nothing you can do about what was already owed. I was voicing my opinion on the increase after increase after increase. When does it end? When do we pass on a city taxi service, amend the restrictive ordinances, and allow an entrepreneur come in and start a taxi business? When do we stop giving money & improvements away to bad business just for the sake of expanding future tax base? A healthy tax rate, well run city, and willingness to be consistent is all most businesses are looking for.
I just want to point out that homes in Wisconsin have not gone down 30%. Homes in Milton have not gone down 30%. If your home went down anywhere near 30% it is because you are a neglectful homeowner. On average, home values have been stagnant. There is a difference between the appraised and assessed value. Since the assessed lags the appraised, and has done so for years, it is possible for your taxes to go up even in a recessive market. Pete, your $30,000 number is either a typo or you are assuming his $100,000 home is poorly maintained. Either way, there are only about 10 houses in town worth only $70,000, and if he is stuck with his tell him to e-mail me. Homes in Milton that are anywhere near $70,000 sell fast. Especially if they ever topped out at $100,000. They may need some updating or care, but they will sell.

That's ok, it was just a schoolboy error. My post from yesterday was not intended to get your knickers in a twist. And yes, I do agree with your last post.

Ghost, your comments in this blog are misplaced spam. You came to the wrong place to preach your sermon. People WERE talking about the smells not cancer causing VOC's. Your message is tainted with misinformation. While attempting to tell us all that we are confusing smells and toxic chemicals, you incorrectly added to your list of misleading statements by preaching this incorrect bit of trash:
"Manure, while not altogether unpleasant to those who grew up in WI, is just a smell. No one gets cancer from smelling it. But, ethanol emissions, are cancer causing. Do you see the difference?"
Educate yourself through erudition rather than attempt to mischaracterize our comments or intended meanings. teach us. I had to look into your past comments to see where you were coming from. While reading your comments on the story, "On Phantom permit baffles commission" (see: OPTION 5 http://gazettextra.com/news/2009/sep/23/... ) posted on September 25 at 10:50 p.m., you incorrectly imply the City, County, or State have any power over the railroad. Crying over the article Mr. Lyke writes is the equivalent of whining that Saturday Night Live pokes fun of serious political issues. If you do not like it, stay in the blog you were over posting in prior to stumbling on this. You can force feed people information, or you can talk so they may listen prior to discounting you as a fanatical. I may not disagree with all that you have to say, but your condescending tone stands in the way. Erudite? The pompously incorrect use of the word tells me you do not know what it means, or you hail from across the pond. I can only assume you meant you use the outdated form of the word to criticize the people posting in the JG blogs. Is your computer you use to post to the Gazette located in your glass house?

I can smell a hint of a yeast-like aroma from time to time, but in my opinion it is just enough of a pleasing smell that conjures up thoughts of a bakery. I am saddened when I smell that only to find my brain 'times out' trying to think of where the nearest place to get a great donut is. Aside from that I can side with people that have a stronger sense of smell than I. My spouse has a extremely strong sniffer, and despite driving around the area, could not smell anything. That doesn't mean the smells are always present, or that to some people they are too strong.
I can say that the 4 times I smelled a extremely strong smell that was not your average bakery smell, was on Highway 26 also. I drove closer to see if it was stronger nearer the plant, but it was non-existent. The smell did not smell like burning or even that yeasty smell I like. It was more chemical laden and obnoxiously sweet. The first thing the came to mind is a meth lab.
I don't know how the Counsel and residents can be up in arms over this when they have resorted to just complaining to each other about the manure smell in Milton Junction. Where are the complaints for that? Why are there no charges for the rancid cow poo smell that permeates the entire western half of the town? The City of Milton will not bite the hand that feeds it. This plant will pay $400,000 in taxes this year. Janesville's cash cow, the landfill, had issues with smell also. They added steps to capture the gases to reduce it, but on some days the residents just have to live with it. Same with the cat food producer in Jefferson, and McCain's onion ring production plant in Fort Atkinson. The bottom line is the homes in the area will just have to live with it. The property in that area will be known for the smells that are present, and the values will drop. Just as the homes in the area between Milton Ave. and the landfill have done. Guess they should have gone to the original hearings to protest. Wait, nevermind.

MrScott:
$105,000 cost = outrageous!
$60,000 subsidized = aka Federal or State tax money
$30,000 in fares = magical number pulled from?
"leaving $15,000 to the city. That's what, $3 per per person? Even if only 25% of the population (just a theoretical number) pays taxes, that's less than $10 per taxpayer per year...83 cents a month"--MrScott
MrScott,
only $___ for this
only $___ for that
only $___ for this too
only $___ for that as well
DO you own a calculator????? It all add up to
only A LOT!!"--Hannah & stoptakingmypencils http://gazettextra.com/polls/2009/sep/ic...
Regardless of whether we are talking about taxi's in Milton or ice arenas in Janesville, if we got by without the services until now, why add services when we can not afford the ones we have. Here is a 2007 article that should reinforce the last statement. Remember, in 2007 housing had not crashed, Lehman Brothers was still in business, GM was still trucking along, 7% of the people that do not have jobs now were working, and MrScott had yet to write his first comment on the Gazette blogs.
"MILTON — The Milton City Council has cut as much as possible in recent years, but it can’t cut its budget any more without cutting services, City Administrator Todd Schmidt said.
Residents will pay 4.6 percent more in 2008 to maintain the current level of service under the proposed city budget."--http://gazettextra.com/news/2007/nov/07/insurance-and-debt-drive-milton-budget-increases
If the idea was a money making proposition, then let an entrepreneur start a tax paying business to cover the need. I bet there are a handful of businesses or people that will drive people around for $90,000/year. If someone went out and purchased a new car they could still make a good living even with insurance and expenses. If the ordinance needs to be changed, change it! Most cities regulate and tax taxi's if they have them. That could be a source of revenue or an bargaining tool to incentivize desired conditions of any permit.
Newempire, or Milton Alderman Brett Frazier, you my friend are a smart man. Too bad we did not have more people like yourself holding positions on the County Board, City of Janesville Counsel, and in our State Capital.

Teachers may not be overpaid, but they are paid too much to flirt with the on-duty liaison officer!
"...the Rock County Sheriff’s Office found Casper exchanged sexually explicit text and My Space messages between November and April...and two Milton School District teachers."
A public records request will out the teachers that think it is ok to waste the taxpayers money on messing around with the officers charged with protecting our kids. How will your husbands, boyfriends, or girlfriends think about what you do at work? They call it work for a reason! Both the teachers and the officer are on the taxpayers dime. The teachers should be teaching our kids. The officer had his hands full and should have no shortage of his own work. These teachers need to be reprimanded!
Did the warrant only go back to the fall of '08? Maybe now that his intimidating authority has been striped other students will come forward to fill in the blanks that Mr. Casper selectively forgot. Although, he could remember a kiss prior to slipping his hand up that girl's shirt without notice or permission. Just enough to cloud the willingness of the participant enough to cast a doubt on her credibility? Casper you may feel like you dodged this one, but you only dodged being fired. Mr. Schuetz better follow through and have his certification revoked. We do not want him popping up at some other small town police department like that one they are having all the trouble with in Walworth County.
If Mr. Casper thinks a kiss is a key to going as far as he wants he did a great job of saying so. Would the investigation team think the same if he forced her to do more? Could she say no? Did she feel she could leave his office considering the circumstances and his position of power? Did she feel she had no other choice? Did they consider his position of authority as a reason she may not have expressively said "no"? Does a rape victim give implied consent when they do not say "no"? God forbid they are too busy crying to get the words "no" or "stop" out. Come on! Assault and battery land people in jail for less contact and way less intent than that. Maybe others will come forward with the info Mr. Casper needs to refresh his memory of the last few years. Let the courts decide his fate. A jury of his peers will see right though his selective silence. Casper, the statute of limitations is not on your side!

Touchy touchy mespl, but the only part of that directed toward you was the fact I was "on point." The rest was using a generalized set of numbers commonly being that of the taxed rate per 100,000 for ease of math. The number $30,000 was used by one of the posters. Assuming they really think a home went down 30% or 30,000 based on a 100,000 home I can easily say they are 100% wrong, or they are neglectful homeowners. Relax a bit and I think you will find we are on the same page.
