HA! One of the best photos I've ever seen on the Gazette page, heehee. Great cause. Thank you!!

Ditto to what prevention said. I grew up on a farm, as well. Work has to get done and kids are part of that and are taught from a super early age to respect machinery & use it safely. I think I drove tractors at about age 9...
But sometimes accidents happen, to both kids & adults.
Good thoughts to everyone.

On Now that the smoking ban has been in place for more than a month, have your feelings about it changed?

Posted on August 13 at 4:01 p.m. ( Suggest removal )

"see how much you love it,when businesss's start closing down"

Seriously?! lol. Other states, other major cities, NYC etc... (ever been out on a Thursday-Saturday in Madison?!) all have smoking bans. And all have the same # of patrons in their establishments as before. Smoking bans do zero to "take away" patrons. Stats show that businesses actually do better after bans, as non-smokers outnumber smokers 3 to 1, and now the folks who couldn't stand being around the smoke enter the doors, as well.

On City won't close Lions Beach, but drowning investigation continues

Posted on August 10 at 11:53 p.m. ( Suggest removal )

I am a certified lifeguard. Have been for years. And these types of situations are sad.
There's a good article on this topic called "Drowning Doesn't Look Like Drowning" that I would hope everyone would take a look at and pass on. http://mariovittone.com/2010/05/154/

Accidents happen. May a lifeguard on-sight have helped? Probably... to ensure that folks stayed within the ropes for swimming or whatever the city designated as a swimming area. But the initial critical moments of the drowning may have been confused with just goofing around in the water or, as the above article points out, may have not even alarmed anyone around the boy, and even a guard on duty may have not been quick enough.
There are 100 factors at work in actual drownings.

But again, plenty of beaches do not have guards at them due to costs. And in those cases people just need to take personal responsibility of themselves. And "closing the beach" is not the answer.

On Music is cultural bridge in teacher of the year's classroom

Posted on May 27 at 11:59 p.m. ( Suggest removal )

LOL to the poster who wanted parents to be able to opt out of this: I'm sorry for what must be your very sheltered, small-world life. CONGRATS Mr. Conway!! Teachers who teach out of the box to enhance their lessons and add art, music, creativity and overall sense of world recognition and awareness plus culture, on a grand scale to whatever subject they are teaching, and manage to *still* stay within the "no child left untested" guidelines: BRAVO!! You are the real teachers who deserve all of the pats on the back anyone can give you. Your students are multitudes more likely to grow up and secure international jobs, foreign relations positions, excel in music, be performers, work in TV/radio/theatrics, etc because they've gotten the taste of it from an inspiring teacher. Job well done for the betterment of our future generations.

On Governor vetoes raw-milk bill

Posted on May 20 at 7:52 a.m. ( Suggest removal )

Apparently you've all forgotten about the family farm who sold raw milk to people here locally, and the people got sick and they/the state went back on the farm?
There's a REASON your milk and your apple juice are pasteurized, folks. And NO, not every farmer has the same standards. I bet most of you have never even been to any kind of farm and do not understand the types of massive protocol that needs to be in place for a great farm to churn out something that would *never* make anyone sick.
Please go do your research before you blast someone for making an educated decision about general public health.

On Census jobs still available

The census worker "killed" in Kentucky hung himself in a cemetery (suicide). I don't think that has any relevance to this. I do think that people are seeking FT, rather than PT. PT is hard to fill.... I find this in my own business.

On Did I vote for the right President?

Posted on February 12 at 12:20 p.m. ( Suggest removal )

I voted for him the first time and I'd do it again in a heartbeat. I worked for the campaign, even.
8 years of crazy, doesn't get fixed overnight.
People should realize this. He has no magic wand (although he NEEDS one AND a superhero cape, if you ask me) and he has a pile of bureaucracy and bad policy to deal with.
Give him his full term and THEN you can have an opinion. But until then? Everyone needs to just pipe down.

On CCAP privacy measure clears hurdle

Spot on, TheAnsweris42. Spot on.
I am an employer who runs in-depth background investigations on employees... And I can tell you right now that CCAP has no business of showing what it shows to the general public. Details are omitted and things are very much taken out of context if you are untrained and looking at someone's public record without knowing what things really mean and/or knowing the "whole story." It's caused many a person to be cut out of the running for a job or discriminated against in a 100 different unfair/incorrect ways because of what someone read on CCAP, despite what the bold print says on the site as far as not using it as a screening tool. I am ALL FOR this new law being implemented.
