Since I don't receive the print edition, I'll have to wait for the rest of the story on here to form an opinion. However, one thing is certain, Barrett and Walker will be fighting non-stop trying to take credit for bringing Talgo to Milwaukee.

I'm not upset over how much snow fell, I couldn't care less. I'm just trying to educate Kman how weather forecasting works, especially in situations where it is uncertain where the heaviest snow is going to fall. Most of the general public doesn't understand the decision making and issuance of products by the NWS, and instead try to find every flaw in what they do. Wow, so the heaviest snow missed Janesville by 20 miles...that not too damn bad at all considering this weather system wasn't resolved by the forecast models until this morning. Most of the gentlemen working over at the NWS in Sullivan are post-undergrand degree professionals who know exactly what they are doing and make the best possible forecasts based on the information they have.

They did say they were unsure of where the heaviest snow would cut off, read the last sentence of the forecast discussion from the NWS:
.
THE MADISON AREA IS ALREADY GETTING INTO THE HEAVIER SNOW BURSTS FOR THE EVENING RUSH...WITH MKE SEEING THE SNOW TOWARDS THE END OF THE RUSH. AXIS OF 3-5 INCH SNOWS LOOKS TO SET UP BETWEEN THE I-94 CORRIDOR AND THE ILLINOIS BORDER ROUGHLY FROM LONE ROCK TO KENOSHA. THERE WILL BE A VERY SHARP CUT-OFF AWAY FROM THIS AXIS. TRYING TO MARK THE EXACT LOCATION OF THE HEAVY BAND IS WHY CONFIDENCE IS NOT HIGH.

First off, the wxunderground radar map has extremely horrible resolution. Second, you are not trained in radar interpretation, I am. Third, those tiny little blips on radar contain convective snow which can fall as fast as 1-2" per hour. Fourth, weather observers have already reported 3-4" in snow in Eastern Dane County into Jefferson County.

kman, just because one area of Madison got 3.3" of snow as of 6pm doesn't mean the campus area did. There is a very good possibility the south side of Madison got 3-5" of snow while the north side got virtually nothing.

Considering it already snowed on the south side of Janesville, you are spouting a lot of nonsense. http://i50.tinypic.com/rw1isn.jpg

Nowhere near 4" kman? hmm.....3.3" in Madison through 6pm, and Madison was just north of the heaviest stuff. I guarantee there has been 4" and more in areas of SE Dane County.
.
A SNOWFALL OBSERVER IN MADISON REPORTED 3.3 INCHES OF SNOWFALL THROUGH 6 PM. THE HEAVIEST SNOW IS EXPECTED IN THE CORRIDOR FROM SOUTHERN MADISON AND STOUGHTON EAST TO WHITEWATER...JEFFERSON...WAUKESHA AND PARTS OF MILWAUKEE TO RACINE AND KENOSHA.

They hit the forecast head on! The initial forecast of 3-5" came early for the entire region as it was unclear where the heaviest band of snow was going to form. Once model guidance and real-time observations made clear the heaviest band was going to be toward the Dane/Rock line into S. Jefferson and N. Walworth counties, the forecast for Janesville was lowered to 1-3".
