Cheese, I fail to see your point. Hoag was first hired in Janesville by the senior McDonald. O'Leary and Haakenson were both hired by their parents in family law firms. I commend anyone who gets an education and comes back to Rock County, whether its to work in the family business or elsewhere. We have an aging population in case you haven't noticed.

This is very much an outdated debate. When it comes to vehicles, what does it mean to “buy American?” Is it buying American when you purchase an American assembled vehicle with an American label, but it has foreign parts? What about a vehicle that is assembled in another country with foreign parts, but it has an American company name? What about a vehicle with a foreign company name and foreign parts, but assembled in America? Which of those is “buying American?” Also, what about the fact that millions of Americans are owners of foreign car companies (stocks, mutual funds, and retirement portfolios)? What about the tens of thousands of American jobs provided in this country by companies with foreign names and American names? The reality is that we live in a global economy and as technology makes transportation and communication easier, our economy becomes more and more intertwined with the economies of the world.

"The statutory requirement is that the city have a plan out to a certain distance from its present borders. That's the law."
That statement is false. 66.1001 of Wisconsin Law requires Janesville to have a Comprehensive Plan which contains land use projections for the next 20 years. If Janesville wanted to take a stand and say the city will not expand in any particular direction, it could do that with the appropriate matching borders on the land use map. There is absolutely no requirement that any city has to project land use a certain distance from its present borders.
"...the city will have little say over WHEN and WHERE development occurs, because it is usually a choice made by individual landowners."
That statement is also false. Cities can exercise jurisdiction over land withing three miles of their borders. Any land division or land uses within that three miles must pass city, county, and township zoning requirements. If a city (or county or township) declined to allow land to be divided or used for any purpose other than agriculture within that three mile extraterritorial jurisdiction, the land division could not occur.

More bad news about the economy. Still not as bad as 2001 though, so hopefully it'll turn around soon before it gets to that point.

Point of clarification, a "present" vote by a member of Congress is the same as passing on the vote. McDonald didn't pass, he took a side by voting "no". It would be nice if he told us why, but I suppose it really doesn't matter. We can all read the contract and see what we like or don't like. Thank you gazette for printing much of the new city manager's contract.

Bike tunnel aside, I am curious where your information comes from lakennedy. If I remember correctly McDonald suggested putting the children's museum on a referendum. I also heard that Brunner was not at that meeting and has never voted on the museum.

My thoughts go out to all those involved in this. Hopefully a new product will become a reality here in Janesville.
