On Evansville, Union leaders talk sharing of services

Mayor Decker: How will the city of Evansville "die" without responsible growth? Do you call approving a subdivision in a flood plain responsible? Here's another hint, you might want to ask the town of Union what they think BEFORE you push for projects within their boundaries.
Evansville has grown away from what made it unique, its small town atmosphere. Building more houses off of Porter Road isn't going to financially solidify Evansville. More homes = more services. Focus on making what you have better. Between 2000 and 2010, has the quality of life in Evansville increased due to all of the growth? Are taxes lower? Are schools less crowded? Have municipal services increased without a fee increase? If they have, I stand corrected, if not, maybe it's time Evansville took a cue from the town of Union. Sometimes doing less, is doing more.

Best of luck to all making the trek. I'd recommend completing it in one day!
On Evansville School District piloting late-start days
Posted on February 13 at 8:21 a.m. ( Suggest removal )
I'm not a big fan of this "pilot program". It almost seems ironic. Teachers are taking hours of education away from students to better teach them. Why don't teachers come in 90 minutes earlier, or stay 90 minutes late. I understand teachers put in long days and work hard, but I believe they could come in 90 minutes earlier once or twice a month. Call me old school, but I would tend to believe that the longer a student is in class, the better off they will be. Teachers have the summer months to "map". Modifying the start of school to accommodate a few teachers, may be a recipe for this "pilot program" to crash and burn.
On City to ask to inspect lawmaker's residence

Mr. Knilans:
I don't understand why one would run for office in another district and not the one they lived in? That way, you don't have to sell your house, and all is good. The rules are the rules. Life's tough for most people in Rock County. I don't know of anyone who has guaranteed employment for two years, with great benefits. Your financial situation is your own personal matter. The criteria for being a Representative to the Assembly hasn't changed. If you are unable to meet that criteria, then maybe being the 44th District Representative to the Assembly is not the job for you.
I ragged on Sheridan for doing what he did regarding residency, so I'm not taking sides. If the people of the 44th are to trust you with the future of the Janesville area, you need to promptly resolve this situation yesterday. This oversight is the wrong way to start your service in the 44th District. Some of the keys to being a great public official depend on honesty, trust, and competency. What's that saying about first impressions?
On Was crib regulation necessary?

While I agree there is a fine line between protecting children and bubble wrapping them, I have no problem with crib regulations. This is worthy of legislation, because it is not a once in a blue moon problem. While "only" one in a million kids are killed from these style cribs, it is only luck that others have not. I ended up reinforcing our families drop side crib because the side would not secure properly. This was years ago, but the peace of mind was well worth the fifteen minutes of effort.
On Is this kid old enough to run a 5,200-cow farm?
Posted on December 19 at 11:53 a.m. ( Suggest removal )
The kid is an adult. I don't look at the age of an employee, I look at their abilities to successfully perform the job. This would be a smart move by his father. He knows exactly what he can expect from his son, and he has an insider in a distant operation.
As I have learned throughout my life, it doesn't matter if you've done something for 40 years or one. If you haven't been doing it well or right, "experience" doesn't make a difference.
As was mentioned, his people skills will be his Achilles heel. Knowing how the farm should run and being able to run it are different things. That being said, it's not like he will be left out on an island.
If the owner says he is the man for the job, then leave it at that.

You can find cases of extremes in both the public and private sector. You can't put any large group in the same box. As far as solutions in the public sector, I feel that the state should have an open offer to investigative journalists. Find fraud, present facts, examples, etc, and the state will give you a percentage of the money that will be saved. These credentialed journalists will have free access to specific financial records and other items which will help make their investigations more accurate and timely. I look at it as a win win.

"Wis. Democrats fails to get new contracts passed"? I'm the last person to bring up grammar issues, but am I the only one who thinks this headline is incorrect?
In regards to what happened in Madison, I've never been a big fan of Sen. Decker, but I am a fan of shaking it up! It's amazing the decisions people make, when they have nothing to lose. They don't have to worry about being a "whore" to any special interest groups, or their party. I wish there were more occasions like this in Madison. It would be a pleasure to expect the unexpected.

On No fan of the Milton Avenue circuit

Greg: Do people ask you for Grey Poupon when they see you at a stop light?
Back in the day, I was pulled over many times for my vehicular transgressions. Janesville made some money off of my untimely decisions. I had some of the best times of my life on Milton Avenue. I could have been out drinking or participating in other, not so good activities. Instead, I would come to Janesville, spend my money, and hang out with friends. It was a central location to meet people from all around the area.
It's a tradition that should be left alone. What's the point of life, if you can't live it. I personally think you lost a stoplight race, and are just bitter!
