On Dog euthanized after police pursuit in Milton

Sorry, but I'm on the owners side for this one. The police are required to make decisions based on facts and reasonable inferences therefrom. The facts are a dog with apparent blood on its face, running at large. Nice try bringing kids into this, but there are NO facts to justify that inference. Nor are there any facts to justify ANY attack on a human. In today's day and age, you can't tell me that if a person were being eaten by this dog, SOMEONE with a cellphone wouldn't have heard/seen it and called in. If you allow this kind of speculation to justify this action by Milton, where do you stop?
On Family: Police let down victims

It's premature to blame anyone at this point. But there is no way the handling of this tragedy by all those involved does NOT get investigated. That said, here are some things that raise an eyebrow: Not notifying the families even eight hours after finding them? Not keeping the gun? (for which there is ample authority for the police to do). All of the "not available for comment" statements from the police chief/crisis place? The police asking the coroner to defer news releases to them? Maybe there are good reasons for all of this (I know, I know, avoid lawsuits). But it also can be interpretted as wanting to hide something. Of course, if everybody did their job--as they may have--there would be nothing to hide from--not even a lawsuit. The police and crisis people are not helping themselves by entering that endless loop of the 'no comment' crap. That only brings suspicion on them, regardless of whether or not they did their jobs according to law and policy. Prayers for the families.

So, what---do we just all sing a round of "Que sera, sera" and move on? I'm not so inclined to do that. If everyone actually did "do their best", then they would have nothing to fear in an extensive investigation. The family is owed at least that. There are a number of nasty intersections in this case, where decisions were made--for better, or as it turned out, for worse. Let's find those, and make sure that we DID do all we could have--or, if we didn't, what to fix, so we'll know what to do better the next time. Prayers to the family.

This is a loser for the district, and Heidi knows it. They'd be wise to settle.

They were decent men, who believed in what they were doing, and tried very hard to negotiate the dysfunctional city government. But I can't say they were great leaders. And I don't necessarily think the Commission was wrong to look elsewhere. There comes a time when you have to 'cut the cord'. I agree that there was a lot of personal grudgery being played out in the whole process with the very first selection the commission made; and, he didn't deserve to be 'played' like he was.

JDB--You do make me think of something: When I compare how the justices of the U.S.S.Ct. are selected nowadays--based more on political ideology than on allegiance to the law/constitution--your view of how America should be may yet come to pass. Unfortunately, that view of America has little to do with the America that was envisioned by our forefathers.
