On An inside look at editing of Sound Off
Posted on June 23 at 1:01 p.m. ( Suggest removal )
While I totally understand why comments have to be edited for brevity, I don't think they should be summarily changed for content. Rather than replacing a phrase, how about printing the comment as written, and then have an editor's note [in brackets] pointing out the factual error? It seems to negate the entire notion of a “sound off” if a Gazette editor is making undocumented changes. Let people speak their mind, but also show it is OK to challenge an unsupported statement. We all can learn from our mistakes.

12,539 showers? I hear you sister! I was single for a long time and spent hundreds and hundreds of dollars on shower and wedding gifts. Some of my cousins even had showers for their second and third weddings. I joked with my friends that if I wasn't married at 35, I was going to send invites, hire a band, get a quarter barrel and throw myself a reception. Registering for gifts, of course! But then again, if your household isn't set up by the time you are 30, you are in rough shape. I have enough stuff. So when I did get married, I had a very small wedding and specifically said NO showers.

First of all, my condolences to both Shaun and Jennifer's families during this difficult time. What a terrible tragedy to fall on your family.
Secondly, (and I have typed this three times until I pushed send--the equivalent of counting to ten) SHAME ON YOU, "concernedfamily"! Blaming the victim, somewhat inferring that she deserved it because she chose not to talk to her husband or because she was in Madison for the evening??? Does anyone else share my outrage at that comment?
On Rotary Gardens board wants to charge an admission fee

I think Rotary Gardens is an asset to our community. It is the first place I bring out of town guests in order to show them that we are more than Milton Avenue Payday loan stores with a Hooter's by the freeway. But, I think to make it inclusive for the community, it should be kept on a voluntary donation basis. Let's face it, people without a lot of extra resources are not going to be able to enjoy this facility and the benefits it would bring to their lives if they had to shell out $5 each time.
I would be willing to pay a reasonable annual fee ($25-50) to be able to view the gardens on an unlimited basis and be able to bring people a few times a year. I bet many other people would as well.
There must be other ways to infuse the place with cash. More special events, perhaps like ice cream socials and fine arts fairs. But I don't think we should encourage a lot of sponsorship if it means billboards and advertising in the gardens. Yuck.
Maybe another fund raising opportunity is to increase the fees for special events. I don't know the fee structure for weddings, but Olbrich Gardens in Madison charges a pretty hefty fee to get married in the garden. And people are on a waiting list for the chance to do it.
In a nutshell, don't shut the doors of this community asset to people who can't afford it.
On Phone scam targets local residents

I got one of these calls on my answering machine yesterday. I thought it sounded fishy because why would Blackhawk Credit Union--local to Janesville--have an out of state area code? (I knew the 515 code was Iowa because I have friends there.) I was going to call BCCU today. Thanks Gazette for letting us know about this scam. It is a lesson for people-NEVER give out personal information on the phone!
On What??!!

If we are talking ash TRAYS here, let's look at the numbers. There are 5,556,506 people in the state of Wisconsin. If we rule out the 5.6% under the age of 5 (I'm guessing they don't smoke on a regular basis)that leaves 5,206,447. Take me out because I don't smoke either. That makes about 140 ash trays per person. Probably a little on the high side. I vote for trees.
Don't ya just love math? (And props to the US Census Bureau too.)

I took one of Mr. Polarski's adult woodworking classes through Blackhawk Tech--Woodworking for Women. It was one of the best classes I have ever taken. He took the time to show us how to use the machines and tools safely and was incredibly patient with all of us "newbies". Not once did he make us feel inadequate to the task. He knew we could do it and gave us the confidence to believe it ourselves. We all left with lovely shaker candlestick tables, an appreciation for the craft of woodworking and most of all a feeling of accomplishment. My table is in my living room, and I can proudly say "I made it" when someone asks where I bought it. That is worth a lot. Thanks Mr. P.

I've been dreaming about the weather warming up so I can grab a good book and go to Rotary Gardens. I love to read in the Japanese Garden. So quiet and peaceful.

Question to localmatters: I translated your Chinese. Why did you say "I like a warm hotel in Beijing?"
I only have one thing to say to you.
