On SSM delays plans for Janesville

Posted on February 19 at 5:04 a.m. ( Suggest removal )

Just a clarification because I'm a nerd. SSM does enjoy profits. A more appropriate title is "not-for-profit" instead of non-profit. The difference between revenue and expenses is still their profit margin just like any for-profit company. The difference is that, unlike a for-profit, they don't have to pay shareholder dividends. The idea for a not-for-profit is that all profits get reinvested in the organization to address community need.

Also, there should be no problem with sharing profit between entities within a system so SMJ could use $ from Madison.

On Hanging up the habit

Well dancer, you are in the minority. There are many people who smoke and don't realize how offensive it is to other people. Esp people that work in service industries. If I'm eating out and my waitress smells like an ashtray...it puts a damper on the whole experience. Even worse when I nurse smells like smoke going into a patient's room.

On UPDATE: Highway 26 reopened

As an avid runner, I must say that if I would have done all my training on cement sidewalks, my knees would be shot. There is a noticeable difference between running on cement and asphalt. Now that I live near the ice-age trail I use that but there is nothing wrong with running on the road, even if there is a clear sidewalk. You run on the left side of the road so that you see traffic coming. Nothing wrong with that.

On Wis. hospitals want a bailout

Cutting advertising is not the solution. Hospitals have to advertise because they have to remain competitive in the areas that do reimburse well in order to subsidize the areas with negative contributions. A bad economy only amplifies this need.

Thankfully, it looks like organizations in this area are being proactive. Mercy cut services and St. Mary’s corporate has laid off people in an attempt to help weather the storm. (and I'm guessing the hospital here will be delayed because of the credit markets) Hopefully our local healthcare infrastructure remains stable despite the challenging times our state is facing.
