On Fundraiser meeting draws 70 people

Local81/JoelRodgers: This is a fundraiser for the school district, not the teacher's union. I, for one, would be happy to contribute.
On Wis. Democrats submit 2nd GOP recall petition

Keep up the good work, Dems. My children and I have participated in the canvassing and collecting signatures. It was great to get out and talk to people and hear why they were choosing to sign a recall petition.

On Janesville School Board votes to cut teachers
Posted on April 7 at 11:05 p.m. ( Suggest removal )
Other local school districts are not facing these kind of cuts right now. My heart goes out to the Janesville teachers affected by this, and I hope that this serves as a wake up call to the city of Janesville. We need to educate our kids, and to do so, we need to fund education.

And FYI: Local 81 = Joel Rodgers.
On Walk out on Walker has Janesville City Council sparring

Is this Republicans' M.O.? When you don't agree with someone's choices, try to dig up (or perhaps, make up) information about their personal life and readily engage in a smear campaign?

It's happening now with world-renowned UW scholar Bill Cronon. This flies in the face of academic freedom and the Republican's motivations are clearly suspect: http://scholarcitizen.williamcronon.net/...
*
And it's happening now with Judge Sumi (who, incidentally, was appointed by a Republican governor). This hasn't stopped the Dane GOP from calling her an activist judge and issuing this most condescending press release I have ever read: http://www.danegop.org/latestnews.aspx?I...

Mr. Raskin, as an educator and long-time union member, I fully support you. Thank you for trying to serve Janesville.

On Protesters gather for Walker appearance

Can I add that I am increasingly upset at the Gazette's lack of coverage of the events in our state? This was probably one of the biggest protests we have seen in this town in years, and it warrants an 89 word article? Please tell me that there will be more in the print edition.

There is also NO mention of what happened yesterday in court in Madison. Full story here: http://host.madison.com/wsj/news/local/g...

To summarize, "If it wasn't clear last time, Dane County Circuit Judge Maryann Sumi made it clear on Tuesday: Any further implementation of Gov. Scott Walker's law limiting public employee unions is barred, and anyone who violates her order risks sanctions." This is MAJOR news. Why is it ignored by the Gazette?

Thanks to those of you who came out to protest! But we need to do more to make change happen in Wisconsin. Here's a quick summary of how you can get involved in other ways: http://www.defendwisconsin.org/2011/03/2...

Essentially, we still need lots of help with collecting signatures to recall the Republican 8. My children and I have gone up to Baraboo/Portage to do this - it's a great way to spend an afternoon! If you are available on election day, you can collect signatures outside of polling places.
*
We also need help to make phone calls and do lit drops to support JoAnne Kloppenburg for the Wisconsin Supreme Court. Election day is April 5th, and this really matters! See the link for details on how to help with this. Multiple groups are involved, and more resources are here: http://www.kloppenburgforjustice.com/

And, of course, continue to come to the capitol and make your voice heard. The DOA has instituted some new (and ridiculous rules) that no signs can be displayed anywhere than on the ground floor. Here's a video of an elected Dane County official and her young children being issued a $200 ticket - for exercising their constitutional rights. http://www.isthmus.com/daily/article.php...

This is what democracy looks like! It's time to take back our state.
On Wisconsin union law published despite court order
Posted on March 25 at 5:28 p.m. ( Suggest removal )
Wow. The TRO is in place, but the LRB publishes the law anyway? What happened to our Wisconsin? I'm heading downtown tonight... I'm seeing calls on Twitter to head to the capitol, so we'll see what the scene is like there. If this law was lawfully published (and I don't think it was), then it would go into effect tomorrow.

On Prospective teachers question career choice
Posted on April 25 at 6:27 a.m. ( Suggest removal )
I work in education, with teachers and prospective teachers. I can't tell you how many college students are seriously reconsidering their career choice as a result of Walker's legislation that negatively impacts education in our state. Some of these students are Republicans themselves - but they see how Gov. Walker is taking away their ability to do their jobs and support their families. We are losing some of our best and brightest in this state - not to mention, many of our experienced teachers are being forced to retire. This is not just a problem for 2011 - this will create issues for decades in the state of Wisconsin.
