On Sanford to close Janesville plant

Yes, HW tried to get it done during his term. Clinton inherited NAFTA and introduced some provisions that attempted to protect workers. However, NAFTA is a free market baby and as such, supported by Republicans not Democrats. Remember that Clinton was fiscally more moderate, and socially liberal (but not far liberal).

15yearsthere: You are more likely to be distracted if you are working and a mother (or father) than if you are not working and a mother (or father). So RH has a valid point. But, perhaps this is all an ugly slam against TRIG!!!!

15yearsthere, Palin just quit her job, so she does not have a job. This does not have anything even marginally to do with gender. If anything, your comment is an insult to all mothers who are employed outside the home. You never hear the term "working dad" do you?

On People demonstrate against Petland, but store says it uses reputable breeders

It is a red herring to turn the puppy mill argument into an argument about all animal rights/vegetarianism, etc. Dogs and humans have a complex, symbiotic relationship going back to the end of the Ice Age. Look at outcry even politically moderate Wisconsinites have raised at the prospect of Michael Vick joining the Packers. Of course dogs have a special status in society.

And legislative efforts can work. The restriction on Sudafed purchasing has decreased domestic meth production and forced a lot of meth production to Mexico. Meth smuggling has skyrocketed. It's probably easier to smuggle meth than puppies, though neither is ideal.

Some states and/or municipalities don't allow the sale of dogs in pet stores. This is especially common out West.

It is erroneous to think that because pets come from the humane society they are abused. Many end up there, especially recently, due to economic factors, divorce or death. If you saw one of the pets (and yes, they do have puppies often), s/he would be indistinguishable from a neighbor's pet.

Lastly, people opposed to puppy mills can protest publicly and seek legislative change simultaneously. They aren't mutually exclusive. Unless you want to repeal the 1st Amendment, people are free to state their beliefs.

My interaction with "Mike", the store manager, has been unpleasant. He was very rude and coarse. Plus, that store is filthy.

Why weren't we given more specifics -- exactly how many dogs does Mike buy from the local community? It could be 2 a year for all we know.

Lastly, if Petland really cares about its dogs, why doesn't it offer to take dogs back that don't work out, just like a reputable breeder? It doesn't have to refund the money to the customers, but could take the animals back. I think the obvious answer is that they would take up too much space and money which could be utilized for small cages for small puppies which can be turned over more quickly.

On Hospital will add 500 jobs

cmalspv: I didn't think reading was your strong point, but clearly math isn't either. The headline reads, "Hospital will add 500 new jobs". The hospital will add 450 jobs. The clinic will add 44. Hospital is a little easier to read, and convey, conceptually than health campus. Either way, the bulk of the new jobs is created by the hospital. 450 is not so far off 500, so your point looks like sour grapes.

If the title is deceiving, it is because you are choosing to read it that way. The hospital is adding 500 jobs. Read my math below. The transfers are to the clinic. You've made a completely unsupported assertion that the other 494 jobs are going to be filled by people from other Dean locations. That's interesting -- given all the negativity about Janesville and Rock County I didn't think it would be a draw.

I'm sure you don't know the entire population of Janesville and Rock County, regarding employment status. It takes more than the few jobs you listed to build, run and maintain a health campus. Medical personnel cannot construct a hospital, nor do they want to deal with the administrative aspect. Moreover, it is not Dean's job to replace GM. This health campus was planned before GM closed the plant and kudos to Dean for following through even after the closure.

There will be more than 44 new jobs created. The writing isn't lucid, but I think you are getting confused because there are two components of the new campus: the clinic and the hospital. The clinic will have 44 new jobs outright. The hospital will have 300 new jobs, a portion which *may* be filled by transfers but which will not be filled by any of the transfers from the current Riverview and Northview Clinics (the 380 transfers mentioned). Then, on top of the 344 new positions, there will be about 150 other new jobs. That brings us to a total of 494 new jobs or nearly 500. No smoke and mirrors here -- just read carefully and drop the jaundiced eye.

On Family sues over death of Edgerton woman

Funny that the family couldn't find a counselor when all these obvious "warning signs" were occurring all along. Also interesting that the family couldn't find a lawyer to consult for a restraining order or divorce in all the time leading up to this. Guess there wasn't much money in that.
