On Judge to weigh in on Wis. GOP lawsuit against GAB

montereykid - You may want to contact the GAB to find out how they plan on handling that situation. If YOU didn't sign physically, but your name is ON the petition...first of all that's a crime that carries tough penalities, and secondly, is something you should fight back on. The GAB phone number is 608-266-8005 - Maybe you want to post their reply so we all know what to expect.
PS - not sure I'd consider a person who would do this as a "FRIEND" - not cool.

1 - this story isn't about whether or not you support the recall efforts, it's about the verification of signatures.
2 - the original story was taken completely out of context. As someone who verifies local candidates for ballot access, VERY THOROUGH checks are done to verify the people attached to the addresses. Several databases are used and built to ensure legitimacy and eliminate duplicates. In fact, in the case of County Board, School Board and City Council, we need to make sure that electors only sign the proper number of petitions (you can only sign for the number of seats open in YOUR jurisdiction/district).
3 - The Petition is a PUBLIC record, so come January 15, 2012, you can purchase a copy yourself and examine against the work done by the GAB to confirm their work as legit (or otherwise). In the examples given originally, you might be interested to know that there are two people in WI with the last name Hitler - first name not adolf but nonetheless, the point that was being made originally is that all names are given credibility until verified otherwise. There is M. Monroe, J. Dean, E(not Elvis) Presley and many more names you can't just eliminate because they share a name with a famous person - these are legitimate voters. That was the point - not that they would take any name no matter what.
4 - As we move into the new year, let's all make a promise to ourselves that we will gather the facts, hear both sides and not make ignorant claims against each other because we can't keep living this way - it's not healthy for any of us, doesn't bring jobs to WI (obviously if prospects read these blogs, they'd run scared!) and it doesn't put our community back together to the thriving and caring county of opportunity that it once was!
HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Do your homework - Then we'll debate.
Furthermore, why are they naming the GAB? They are the neutral party established to implement the law as fairly as the laws will allow - they don't have lawmaking authority.
The law on it's face is constitutional, but the junk buried into the law may not be - nonethless, this is a matter of morality and ethics, not constitutionality.
Absolute power corrupts - ABSOLUTELY!

Good reminder Greg...while it is hard to watch people with COPD struggle, it is not a life sentence usually.

Kicking the habit for those who never smoked need to know that it is by far the hardest thing to do; I had to quit 11 times before it stuck more than three years ago! (Guess I'm no quitter!)
-
Even in this economy, I see people paying $6+ bucks for 20 cigarettes and even when they can't pay their light bill, they buy cigarettes! Then with the new indoor air laws, it is wild to see people huddled up in the freezing cold - and I know they'd rather NOT want to do that! It stinks, looks totally unnatural and costs a ton - in $ and health!
-
My favorite advice to those who want to quit even a little bit...keep quitting! Chantix isn't for everyone, but quite effective. I had to force myself to smoke in a mirror every time I smoked a form of self reflection and self love)...that's how I know how ridiculous it looks!
Best wishes to your friend and thanks for the reminder!

Frusion - We approved a TOTAL of $46,570 and I don't think we can afford not to approve the raises we did. There were still several folks on that list who are unrepresented by unions and make less than the private sector. I.T. people often stick to the private sector for the wages and benefits, thus, the equalization. As for the performance rewards, the $10,000 incentives are a small price to pay when you consider walking away from investing the number of people JSD has placed on the Journey to Excellence in order to make the most of a $3.2 million dollar gift from the Studer Group. Even when the Stock market is down, the worst advice would be to cash out and walk away...We've made the investment and committed to a long range return on investment - that being one of the TOP performing schools in the State and eventually, the Nation. Education involves taking empty minds and transforming them into open minds with ideas and goals for a strong future...
I have made many mistakes in the past 5 years on the board I'm sure. I've placed faith and hope in places I shouldn't have - but the decisions that need to be made to move forward take courage, foresight and MORE faith and hope...I won't give up on the SDJ or the Janesville Community! Let's kick this recession's rear end together! United we stand, divided we fall.

Gary - Good catch! It was a 1974 Buick Apollo. And yes the car was towed on a flat bed to a junk yard where my father took photos and recovered my belongings! I think I wrote 72 because of Greg's Mustang...
Sorry:-)

jvl93 - Notorious? Really? After reading your 400 posts since March, I see you are not a fan of my volunteer time of 6 six years on school board trying to make a difference for my community. I question which one of us is giving "lip service" since I stand behind what I say with a name and evidence/argument for the claims I make. As for higher office, not right now. I've never denied that it stirs my heart but I LOVE what I'm doing right now and have my plate plenty full for the next several years! Everything I do as a school board member has NOTHING to do with future political office and EVERYTHING to do with balancing quality educational opportunities for the youth of Janesville with the taxpayers ability to fund those opportunities. Given we are in the worst economic times of my 43 years of life, that's a very hard thing to balance! Knowing for sure what $2.1 million in cuts means, helps me carry a message to the community and let's them decide how far we damage our existing educational system - one that is currently teetering on a slippery slope as the Superintendent stated. I know personally about the difficulty for many/most to come up with $55/year in tax increases on the heels of everything else in today's economy...but I also know the depths of the districts current quandry in providing the quality education our children DESERVE! Try to read between the lines sometimes and never hesitate to call me if you want to discuss further - Lori

On Judge to weigh in on Wis. GOP lawsuit against GAB

The GAB is the Elections Board. Only the name changed when they merged with the Ethics Board to save resources. In many states, the Secretary of State manages election law - but as you know, we don't find value in having an elected Secretary of State in WI and are trying to eliminate it. There has to be NON-PARTISAN accountability in elections...this lawsuit is sitting on a very slippery and partisan slope.
As they used to say on NBC after school specials...THE MORE YOU KNOW:-)
