On Milton chief to make $68,500

The Good Ole Boys network is alive and well. Unfortunately, it's an unscrupulous, unethical group of boys scratching each other. I guess bad things DO happen to good people (i.e. the citizens of Milton and the loyal, longtime staff at the department). It's really unfortunate that the good people around here keep getting shafted over and over and over.

Didn't Tupper publicly promise the next chief would be promoted from within because there were a number of strong internal candidates just a few months ago???? The only reason that wasn't done is because the city administrator couldn't manipulate any of them. There was no choice but to use one of Roberts's personal friends so that the secret agendas and lies of the administrator could be carried out.
It's unfortunate that Milton can't be noted for its ethical and moral city decisions.

Interesting how he failed to mention his close personal friendship with Bob Roberts.

Did anyone report that the morale of the city employees is at an all-time low since Mr. Schmidt has been at the helm? Did anyone mention that the organizational study for the Department of Public Works, which exceeded $3,000, was bid out according to City policies, but that the organizational study for the Police Department was never bid out, and is costing the taxpayers $62 per hour? (City policies only have to be followed occasionally.)

Well, tjncj, can you explain why Gilland and Hawkins didn't get paid what you propose is appropriate for this person? At least they were devoted to the community for many years - Gilland even devoted his whole career.
Sounds like you're playing favorites.

Even though his contract is only until July 1, this hourly rate works out to $128,960 annually - Milton taxpayer money being paid to someone who is not even a member of the community, nor who will have to live with the results of what he does or doesn't do here. Everyone has a price to do ANYTHING and then leave.

Toma - Thank you for your insights and endorsement. I'm not sure if I should be flattered, though, to be referenced as "he". It's nice to be able to finally share my thoughts and insights which have had to remain silent within me as I work many late nights. I have witnessed for a long time much damage being done to this wonderful city, but have had to remain publicly impartial and dutiful. I only pray that the Council will take measures to finally remove the cancer.

Well, Dawg, I wouldn't be too quick to beat up on the council over the contracts offered. If they don't get ALL OF THE INFORMATION (i.e. Schmidt only gives them the info he wants them to know so he can manipulate them), it's pretty hard for them to make good, educated decisions. Why do you think the city got into so much trouble over the ethanol plant? Schmidt is a control freak who tries to manipulate everyone around him.
The council should be faulted for being so naive that they don't reign Schmidt in or get rid of him. They are being led by an incompetent, rather than THEM LEADING the city. Schmidt is very close to the mayor who protects Schmidt's every step. What a shame?!?!?!!?

"reader"'s comment would be appropriate in a "normally run" city, however, in the City of Milton, the council is responsible for letting the Administrator run amock. The Administrator chose and directed the Roberts to get him someone he wanted and therefore, Roberts directed the Police Commission to do what he wanted and put their rubber stamp on it. Beachsexton is right on the money. The process that is used around here is unethical, ILLEGAL (if the Attorney General's office would just dig a little into evidence), and immoral. Until the City Council wakes up and deals with the Administrator's immoral, unethical (and sometimes illegal) ways of doing business, things will NEVER get better around here.
People can call the Police Commission, but the REAL change and remedy MUST COME FROM THE CITY COUNCIL MEMBERS (also people that this administrator has manipulated quite well).
Way to go Beachsexton!!!
