On Battle of words

Posted on November 24 at 7:22 p.m. ( Suggest removal )

I can see justsome1here's reasoning, however I the kids involved with this program are already voracious readers. Perhaps the organizers think that they are doing enough by turning the kids on to reading, but I don't feel that is a correct assumption. My point is the people in charge of the competition are not mustering a competition appropriate to the level of accomplishment and effort the reading groups are entitled to expect.

On Battle of words

I have one problem with the battle of the books.

My daughter was part of a team last year, and is again this year. Also my wife is a coach.

Everyone reads 40 books, meets many times to practice, gets all excited ---- and then after about 3 minutes the "battle" is over for the vast majority of the kids.

I think the library and the people setting up this program OWE the participants more of a tournament, with more than one chance to get eliminated. There is no atmosphere of competition, just dread over being disqualified and then everyone goes home.

This program takes much more than it gives back.

On Web numbers surge; does print suffer?

I think that the company (Bliss) has to look at the paper, web, radio and whatever other devices are being used to deliver information as one, rather than unique individualized businesses. The community will follow and expect certain results from each, while knowing that to get total information all sources have to be considered. Thank you Mr. Angus for an excellent local newspaper and web site.

On Wind siting questions remain

The proposals are meant to deal with large scale wind power generation, but what about the newer development of small scale wind power that can be sited by inividual property owners. Maybe the law be broadened to regulate these users.

On Reaction from soldiers

Thanks for your blog.

I believe you are correct that the national media does create an attitude for a population. The Fox News Blondes are preaching fear and distrust on a daily basis here in the US.

I find your commentaries to be level-headed.

Thanks again

On Road to Sulaymaniyah

Thanks for the insights on Irag.

I'm wondering how the quality of life has changed under the occupation.

Why do employees of a hotel sleep on the floor wrapped in blankets? It is a "hotel" so I assume there are some beds somewhere.

Where does everyone disappear to after dark?

What kind of currency is being used for trade?

Again, thanks to Mr. Keith for his sharing his insights.

On Obama visit adds heat to hot news season

It was a feather for the local dems to have Barak Obama visit Janesville. The GM plant is historically important and nationally recognizable, but again I'm left wondering if our local dem party leaders can see past GM to greater Janesville.

On Bike trail tunnel closer to reality

Posted on January 30 at 6:33 p.m. ( Suggest removal )

Seems like there are only two viable possibilities, the tunnel or stopping traffic to allow a trail user to cross. This block of Milwaukee Street already has a stop light at the Wright Road, and the city is studying the need for a light at Wuthering Hills, so a light in the middle will result in 3 in one block. I tend to think the outcry by drivers having to deal with those 3 lights in the middle of residental Milwaukee Street would eventually result in a tunnel.

On Is anonymity the way to go?

Posted on January 24 at 7:56 a.m. ( Suggest removal )

Web comments-- such as this--- are not fully reasoned "opinions", but rather strung together thoughts. So I believe the anonimity is important.

There is value in this form of communication, much like there is in an informal conversation. Ideas have to be worked out before a more reasoned comment can be made.

I wouldn't want every utterance I make to be quoted, and the same for off-the-cuff remarks I might make in this forum.

Trying to make web comments fit editorial standards is a mistake.

On Janesville city manager makes redevelopment a top priority

Posted on January 17 at 7:41 p.m. ( Suggest removal )

The city has done some good things to the downtown area. Changing the one way streets back to two way, new street lamps used on the Court Street improvement should be used more. I especially like the change on Milwaukee Street---down to one lane with plenty of room on both sides. Really makes driving down that section enjoyable. The downtown is pretty much residential and should be improved to keep that character.
