On Janesville ice arena advocates ask for different location

Super Dave,

We all pay taxes on things we don't support or agree on.

Using my tax money to improve the community and quality of life of my family and the many other Janesville familys who will use these rinks, is acceptable to me.

Exactly how much is it going to cost each one of us Janesville residents? Do you know?

In a sense, I agree with you. To bad we can't pick and choose what we pay taxes on. I think it may possibly solve alot of problems in society if we did. A fixed tax rate for all, based on gross income, and the TAXPAYER decides where their tax money goes in the community. That would be real representation and giving the power back to the people. Totally eliminate politics from the equation. Let the people decide. How would you feel about that? I bet those rinks would be built much quicker.

I am tired of seeing my tax money spent on programs I don't support.

Tell me what you would like to see the money spent on and please be specific.

By the way, I would spend mine on improving the quality of life for my family and I.

Build the rink!!!! I am willing to pay the little amount of taxes for the increased standard of living it will provide me and my family.

A new rink for a hockey crazy town like Janesville is LONG overdue.

To all of you that think it is a small amount of people using it, just come to an open skate, or a Jets or Bluebirds game. You obviously have not done this.

I would be interested to see just how much this would raise our taxes here in Janesville. I doubt it would be much at all.

The naysayers in this thread are the same ones that said the Jets would be a flop and would not draw the crowds needed to make it a successfull venture, then started boo hooing beer sales at the game. Have any of you been to a game yet? The Jets have been a HIT!!!! You guys were WRONG, and you are wrong on this rink.

On Finding a name for a Janesville hockey team

Posted on May 6 at 8:23 p.m. ( Suggest removal )

Geez, those names SUCK!!!!! Did someone go out and tie one on and write those down on a bar napkin after 10 drinks?

The logos look pretty good. Particularly the Jays logo.

Why not a REAL hockey team name like the North Stars, Fighting Saints, Wolves, ect.?

I have not read the comments so don't know the history behind these names, but really...what the hell were you thinking?

If I HAD to pick one of those, I would definetly go with the Jays. The logo is GREAT!

On How would you characterize the base of users at the Janesville ice arena?

truthteller,

I am with you. Lets build a drag strip right next to a new hockey rink. I would never go home.

I retired from the Army and moved here last June because Janesville had hockey and a hockey rink. That was a big part of our decision on where to move.

Now the thought of having a NAHL team here makes it even better for my family and I. We are a hockey family. We are kind of limited on where we can live due to job requirements. Otherwise I would just move back home to Minnesota. However, that can't happen.

Janesville fits the bill perfectly now. Bring that team here! I am a tax payer that is willing to pay to get them, and keep them here.

Junior hockey in Janesville?? Are you kidding me?? That is GREAT!

When can I buy season tickets?

Congratulations to both of them as well as John and the rest of the team. I enjoyed watching every game I attended.

The kids had a great year, played well together, and the games they lost seemed to be because of penalties more than anything else.

Congratulations on a great year fellas!

As far as pitting one kids achievements against the others...that is wrong. They all excelled and contributed as a TEAM.

Let the scouts determine the rest. Good job Bluebirds!

On Vote brings hockey team step closer

I agree jvlsportsfan.

For me, this is an investment in our kids futures. They need a team and facility like this. It provides opportunity for them and something to strive for in their future.

Do well in High School hockey, you could play juniors in your hometown. If you do well at the junior level, you could get a scholarship to play in college. Do well there, you might be able to make pro. It keeps their dreams alive.

ROTFL Daddy, that was funny.

lovemycountry,

I love my country as well. I just retired in June, after nearly 22 years active duty Army career. I chose Janesville as the place to retire.

There is alot that I like about this town. I like the bike paths, though I don't use them. I like the parks, though I don't use them either. I have no problem paying for them though. Maybe someday I will decide to start using these nice quality of life ammenities that my tax dollars pay for.

I do fully intend to use the hockey rink. So do my family and friends. I am going to vote for it and spend our money to do so.

I could teach you to play hockey if you like or even skate. Let me know. ;)

PART 2

The argument made by some here, that we are in some way funding a private organization is ludicrous. We are not 'giving' them our money. We are paying for the improvements to OUR rink so they can use it and we can benefit from it.

I am not a fan of taxation. Particularly for programs that I don't support. However, I am a HUGE fan of hockey and want this team here. This team will improve the quality of life in this city.

As another poster mentioned, I don't think of Janesville when I think of hockey. I think of Minnesota or Canada. However, I don't travel to Minnesota or Canada when I want to watch hockey. I go to Madison to watch my kid skate, or Iowa for my other kid, or the Janesville rink to watch the High School team play. Now I can stay home, here in Janesville, and watch OUR NAHL team skate.

If you have never been to a Junior game, you are missing out. It is fun hockey. Players are playing for the right reasons...they love it. It is a higher level of hockey and something our communitys kids will now be able to aspire to.

I am also for serving beer at these games as well. If there are problems with patrons abusing it, toss them out. Just like anywhere else. I gurantee if you designate a beer drinking area in this element, you better make it a large area. The majority of fans will be drinking beer (myself included). No different from the Super Bowl Partys, Stanley Cup, World Series, ect.. It is going to be a place to relieve stress and have fun with your family and friends. I know this for a fact. I have been to many of these games in Iowa (where I moved to Janesville from).
