On Flu bug arrives in Wisconsin

A study in this month's issue of the medical journal "Vaccine" finds a "significant positive association" between the seasonal flu vaccine and getting a lab confirmed case of H1N1, despite correcting for other factors. This may confirm what other people have told me for years -- if you get vaccinated, you're more likely to get the flu, or at least get it badly enough to need to seek medical care, and therefore testing.
I'm not a doctor (nor do I play one on TV!), but my family won't be getting the flu shot.

On Walworth County expected to ban concealed weapons in county buildings

Let's see . . . we want to post signs to make sure that law abiding people don't carry concealed weapons to protect themselves from the criminals, who will simply ignore the rule and be carrying concealed weapons. Think, people!
On Sheriff to release reports in Wis. court flap

So, since the justices' stories "vary", I guess we know that we've managed to elect a few liars to the Wisconsin Supreme Court. Not exactly reassuring for the citizens of Wisconsin!
Somehow, my suspicion is upon those who went straight to the newspapers (rather than to the police, where one would logically go if one really felt threatened -- unless one has no faith in the legal system). Were the accusers perhaps trying to remove a conservative that they had recently failed to push out through a recount, in their anything goes effort to block Governor Walker's reforms?

Dehydrating is another good way to save vegetables, as well as to store them compactly. I dry zucchini slices -- great in winter stews and Italian dishes -- and many other vegetables.

You're not living near a highway or driving a diesel vehicle, are you? Diesel exhaust is one pollutant suspected of causing food allergies. Mold in the home may be another. While they still can't cure food allergies, it may be possible to avoid developing more.

On Homeschooling: A Parent's Choice
Posted on March 11 at 6:01 p.m. ( Suggest removal )
We chose homeschooling long before our children were born, due to what I'd seen as a public school teacher. It's been wonderful! I have polite, responsible teenagers who are comfortable dealing with anyone from birth to 100, and more importantly, are comfortable in their own skins -- to the great frustration of those who've tried to manipulate them using negative peer pressure! Academically, being able to learn at their own rates has allowed them to far surpass their publicly schooled peers, as well as to "follow their bliss", learning the skills and subjects that they're most interested in. Maybe most importantly, my children have learned how to learn independently. Give them a book, a DVD, internet access, an item to experiment with, or some time with an expert, and they can learn anything.
It's certainly cost our family a lot of time and money to homeschool, but we (both parents and children) think it's been the best investment we've ever made.

I read advice on the internet to pull up the vines and hang them from the basement ceiling and wait for the tomatoes to ripen. Amazingly, it's works, and it's fun to go downstairs and pick ripe tomatoes.

Think it over. The grass isn't greener on the other side of the fence and children suffer more than their parents see, including being less able to sustain lasting relationships of their own.

I'm blessed with a wonderful, loving marriage, but maybe it's that way because we both came into it making an absolutely permanent commitment, so we discuss and compromise and put one another ahead of everything else. Keeping the flame alive involves time together, the risk of emotional honesty, and effort, but it's very, very worth it. I hope that you and your wife are able to give it another try -- for real and for keeps.

On Childhood immunizations: Safe or not?
Posted on November 29 at 8:37 a.m. ( Suggest removal )
Autism isn't the only issue. Take a critical look at the possible side effects (those actually admitted by the manufacturers) and then decide which vaccines to give.
The varicella (chicken pox) vaccine had a side effect risk that was, when I considered it for my children, approximately equal to the damage risk of catching a diagnosed case of chicken pox. Since many children have symptomless chicken pox infections, it was clear that risk of the vaccine was actually higher than of the disease. No way on that one!
The HPV vaccine has been implicated in many deaths and permanent disabilities, and hasn't even been proven to prevent HPV harm. HPV generally clears quickly from a person's body without harm and can be completely prevented by mutual fidelity. Will I risk that vaccine for my children? I'd be surprised if any informed parent would.
Many of today's vaccines seem to be nothing but money makers for pharmaceutical companies and the politicians they finance, often to the detriment of public health. We are the most vaccinated and sickest first world country -- Think there's a connection? http://www.nvic.org/
