On Doyle vows to fight to keep plant open

Posted on June 4 at 9:17 p.m. ( Suggest removal )

I whole-heartedly agree with R1234 100%! It's also important to keep in mind that this plant closing has a trickle-down effect. There are smaller manufacturing facilities (in Janesville), for example Leer, who this is going to have a detrimentral impact on. GM is only the first plant to be laying employees off and closing it's doors. Eventually there will be many others doing the same. Where does that leave this community that once thrived? How long is it going to take us to recover from this huge loss to Janesville? Even more sickening, all we can do is sit back and watch it happen. Our government, or lack thereof, won't do a thing to help us out. They're more concerned about sending business overseas. Eventually none of us will be employed....unless we move to China!

Tripple.......you are absolutely right! Did we argue as much to keep the programs in the district more than we have argued over adding a girls hockey team? Doubtful......very doubtful. As a parent of a large family, with several of our children active in everything from academics to extra curicular activties to sports and many more, I appreciate the opportunitites that they are given. We pay a fee for each sport that each child participates in. The booster club raises money to help buy uniforms and other necessary items. We pay admission fees to the games. Your tax dollars are being spent on other projects. The day is coming when we will all be forced to pay high tuition fees, as well as buying all the books and other supplies. Eventually the highschools will be forced to operate like the college systems do. At that point, it's going to cost us even more money! So maybe instead of bickering, this community should figure out a way to keep what we have and be greatful for it. If you want programs back that were cut, go to the School Board meetings and address these issues. Pester them until they start listening to what you're saying. I understand the elderly can't afford higher taxes, but neither can we. What we do for these kids, at this moment, determines what their futures will hold for them. They have so many more opportunities and classes available to them that I ever did in school. None of us will agree with each other 100%, so this discussion is a mute point. Let's value what we have and support all of the students, regardless......

All those for and against have valid reasons for their opinions. I don't like to see any school cut education, music, art, sports....the larger problems would be the "No Child Left Behind Act". Because of this so-called attempt to help struggling children, they're actually doing a diservice to these kids. They are pushed throuh and being given enough extra credit to pass them along into the next grade. It's not just the school system failing our chldren due to budget cuts and poor decisions, our communties are failing them by allowing any of this to happen. Maybe if more of us voiced our opionions on the important topics and what's best for our children, there would be no need to argue about this in a forum. Think about this.....our City has money to throw away (millions) on re-contructing an existing aquatics facility. How is that going to help our youth? Maybe it'll give a small number of them jobs. There's absolutely no reason at all to take away any classes or any sports. Let's give our kids opportunitites that we didn't have and stop arguing and complaining. Has anyone considered asking our kids how THEY feel? It's their future we're messing with. Our tax dollars are wasted on a lot of other foolish things than adding a sport.

frog88 if you wanted to let this go, you wouldn't have made a point of it to dig at the parent and his child mentioned in your message. You also didn't need to comment about the Coaches personal life. It's not for public debate and it's certainly none of your business. Let sleeping dogs lye and don't personally lash out. What's done is done and what's said is said. If you want your children to succeed, don't rub salt to wounds or you'll paint a giant bullseye on them. Instead of being so harsh on the parents involved, step outside of the box and put yourself in their shoes for a second. As a parent, how would you feel if this were one of your kids? As a parent, it's painful and heartbreaking to watch your child go through this. Some parents handle that pain and heartbreak differently than others would. Don't be so quick to judge and try a little kindness for a change.

What is failed to be mentioned in all of this arguing is the simple fact that this begins way before highschool! Let's try 6th grade. I agree, skill level doesn't always come into the scene. One of my children plays 6th grade basketball, in-house and travel team. In the in-house program he/she is one of the top scorers on his/her team, scoring most of the points in each of their games. On the traveling team, there are 10 players selected out of over 60 trying out. Unfortunately, our child has been disliked by one of the coaches for several years. He/she went from playing an entire game to sitting, without playing, in ALL of his/her traveling games. Sadly, this heartbreaking experience has made him/her to question /hisher abilities and has really taken his/her self-esteem down. He/she doesn't even want to play a game that he/she thrives on. On the other side, we also have a couple children who have started every game (different sport) since they were young. As a parent, I feel both sides of this argument and rather than holding this as a public forum for all of us to argue about, maybe we should work together and help our children by supporting them. Mr. Barry you have been an avid supporter of one of our children and thank you for taking notice of his/her abilities. One of our other children has also been the spotlight of the local youth sports, but in a completely unique sport that isn't relevent to this particular area. The same child that is experiencing heartbreak in another sport. We can't chastise the coaches for the decisions they make if we don't have the courage to speak with the coaches personally. Shame on the parent(s) for the situation that occurred this past year and shame on us for not being adult enough to support our children. This should have never been a community argument. Unfortunately, those who really know the story behind this ugly situation know that there were more involved than just one parent. It's time to move on and stop making such a stink about whose right and whose wrong. It's a sad day when kids act more adult than adults do! Support the kids and act like adults for a change!

David was as solid as ever between the pipes last night. He did an OUTSTANDING job against the toughest team in the State! He is a "natural" athlete and is a shining star between the pipes. The Bluebirds had a great season and we'll see them at State again next year, stronger and faster than ever before. Congrats Bluebirds, you really our the town heros.......you've really brought our community together.

It was definitely a goalie game! Congrats Boys...you deserve to be where you're at. What you've accomplished says it all.....you didn't let any of the adversities hinder you as a team and that's exactly what you are, a real team!! In all my years of watching various sports, I have never seen a team play as well together as the Bluebirds! Janesville fans took up at least 75% of the rink----standing room only----what an awesome sight! They play a tough team in their first game Thursday, but after watching David and his teammates, they can accomplish the unthinkable....the unbeatable. Let's fill those stands Thursday afternoon and cheer these Boys on to victory. Boys, you've made it to the show, now shine like you never have before. We have faith that you are "the best" team in the State, now prove that to all those who doubt. Good luck and we'll be there to cheer you on!

This is an extremely talented group of kids. There's no doubt in my mind that they'll be able to give Stoughton a difficult time. It would be an excellent sight to see the stands full of Bluebird fans. Our support and their determination have gotten them this far. It'd also be great for the Janesville school district to load up as many buses as they can and take their large following of high school fans to cheer these guys on! This team brings Janesville together....what a great feeling! Good luck Bluebirds...you have it in your heart and you have the skill to win Saturday. You've come this far, take it all the way!!!

It amazes me how everyone's views are so different. I think it's safe to say that all involved have learned a valuable lesson, including the company that handed out certificates to the athletes. I'm on the fence with the arguments you've all presented. I agree that Throdenson should be aware of the WIAA rules and none of us will ever know if they took a chance or they honestly didn't know. If they took a chance, shame on them. I wonder how well defined the athletic code really is. Is it so specific that the students and parents should have known this would be an issue? Or is it so vague that they felt it wouldn't be a conflict? At the end of the day, when all is said and done, unfortunate mistakes were made. I am proud of the students who have admitted to their mistakes and are willing to take whatever punishment may be handed to them. It's another valuable lesson in life. What they've learned from this mistake they will carry over into their adulthood and will probably look back and make informed decisions due to this. Not only the handful of students that were involved, but all of them. To be frank, if I were given two choices as to what "rules/laws" I would want my children to break, one of them being this situation and the other being robbery, asault, or the worst possible form of crime.....there's no thought process to that at all. Fact remains, there are kids walking the streets, in our own community, involved in crimes of violent nature. These arguments need to be put to rest. All of the athletes involved, including their teammates, deserve our support.....whether we agree or disagree. We have to build a strong foundation for the future of our communities and there are times when we have to face hurdles in order to do so. Lesson learned by all......it's time to move past this and be a better community because o it.
