The UW-Whitewater women’s basketball team finished business in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference regular season Saturday by winning at UW-La Crosse.

Now, it’s time to focus on the postseason.

The No. 14-ranked Warhawks completed their WIAC regular-season championship with a 61-50 victory over the Eagles. The Warhawks finished 12-2, three games better than La Crosse, Eau Claire and Oshkosh (all 9-5).

Whitewater (22-3) earned a first-round bye in the WIAC Tournament and will play a semifinal game at Kachel Gymnasium at 7 p.m. Thursday against the lowest remaining seeded team.

Despite the loss, La Crosse (9-5, 16-9) will be the second seed for the WIAC Championship and host a semifinal game Thursday against the highest remaining seed.

Malia Smith scored 17 points to lead Whitewater past La Crosse on Saturday. Olivia Frechmann added 14 points and eight rebounds, and Sarah Schumacher added 10 points and eight rebounds.

The game consisted of several runs.

A 13-4 run put the Warhawks ahead 33-22 lead, enroute to a 36-30 halftime lead.

La Crosse responded with a 9-1 run to start the second half to go ahead 39-37.

The Warhawks responded with an 8-0 run to go ahead 45-39, and eventually built their biggest lead of the game at 55-43 in the fourth quarter.

Delaney Schoenenberger, a sophomore out of Janesville Craig, led the Eagles with 12 points and had three rebounds.

Another sophomore out of Craig, Annie Schumacher, scored five points.
