Sean McCann has made a habit of frustrating the Clyman Canners.
His latest effort ensured the Milton Junction Pub Raptors will play for at least another week.
J.T. Smithback’s two-run double in the eighth backed McCann’s complete game as the Raptors topped the Canners 4-2 on Sunday, advancing both teams to a winner-take-all Rock River League South Division championship game.
Clyman (15-5) entered Sunday’s game unbeaten in the double-elimination playoff bracket, while Milton (16-6) needed a win to stay alive. The Raptors did just that, cracking 15 hits and keeping the Canners scoreless until the ninth, to force another meeting between the two squads Saturday.
First pitch is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. in Milton. The winner advances to the Rock River League grand championship.
McCann fired nine efficient innings and struck out six, picking up his third win over Clyman this season.
“It was Sean’s game today. He really carried us,” Milton manager Doug Welch said. “Sean has pitched really well against them. He gets fired up to throw against them.”
The Raptors led 2-0 before Smithback lined a double into the right-center gap to score two in the top of the eighth. Those insurance runs proved crucial as Clyman pushed across two in the bottom of the ninth.
Five Milton players had multiple hits, led by McCauley Cox’s 3 for 5 day. Smithback was 2 for 4.
Clyman’s Brock Vredeveld was stuck with the loss after striking out three in eight innings.
