The Janesville Jets’ special teams units came through Saturday night.
Jakov Novak scored two goals and assisted on another, and the Jets scored two goals on the power play and added another while shorthanded to hold off Springfield 5-4 and earn a weekend split at the Janesville Ice Arena.
Novak’s shorthanded goal midway through the first period gave Janesville a 2-0 lead, but Springfield got two goals in the first eight minutes of the second to even things up.
Novak gave Janesville the lead for good with his eighth goal of the season, scoring off passes from Sam Renlund and John Pesek on the power play at 15:39 of the second. Matt Barbolini made it 4-2 with another power-play goal just 75 seconds later.
The Jr. Blues cut their deficit to 4-3 by scoring with less than two minutes remaining in the game, but the Jets got an empty-net goal 30 seconds later and held on despite Springfield scoring with an extra attacker with 48 seconds remaining.
The two NAHL division rivals combined to commit 23 penalties, including 12 for 53 minutes by the Jets. The Blues went 0-for-5 on the power play.
Janesville travels to Brookings for a two-game series beginning Friday.
