The matchups in Saturday’s Lodi Duals wrestling tournament looked stout on paper.

And they certainly played out that way on the mats, as well.

Lodi and Waunakee each went 4-1 to earn top billing, while Elkhorn was 3-2, Craig was 2-3 and Evansville/Albany and Viroqua were each 1-4. Craig coach Mark Mullen said nearly every dual came down to the final match or two, and more than one was tied and settled by criteria.

Lodi is the seventh-ranked team in the state in Division 2, while Waunakee is ninth in Division 1. Craig (D1), Evansville/Albany (D2) and Viroqua (D2) are all receiving votes.

Craig won close matches against Viroqua and Evansville/Albany and lost to Lodi and Waunakee. In the match that settled third and fourth place, Elkhorn and the Cougars tied 36-36 and the Elks won on the deepest of criteria.

“We were 2-3 for fourth place, which is not outstanding. But it really wasn’t too bad, because that was about as competitive a tournament as you can get,” Mullen said. “It was a meat grinder.”

Senior Keeanu Benton, ranked No. 3 in the state in Division 1 at 285 pounds, was Craig’s only undefeated wrestler on the day. He beat a couple ranked wrestlers to go unbeaten.

Four others went 4-1: sophomore Joe Bellomo (126 pounds), senior Nate Ellis (132), sophomore Mitchell Schumann (195) and freshman Brady Schenk (220).

“We had some nice surprises,” Mullen said. “But our guys aren’t satisfied. And they better come back ready for this week.”

Craig hosts rival Janesville Parker for the Kaster-Cramer Cup at 7 p.m. Friday.
