Thanks to three individual champions and a successful final round, Janesville Craig’s wrestling team won the Whitewater Invitational on Saturday.

The Cougars finished with 254 points, while Kenosha Bradford was second with 225.5. Host Whitewater was third and Beloit Turner was fourth.

Ethan Smith, Nate Ellis and Keeanu Benton won individual titles for Craig.

Ellis, a senior, improved to 7-0 on the season. He beat Turner’s Trey Bivens 3-1 in the championship match.

Smith won the 145-pound title. The senior also improved to 7-0 and beat Lorenzo Lazcano of Waukesha North 5-4 in the championship bout.

Benton, a junior and a state qualifier a year ago, pinned all four of his opponents Saturday at 285. He pinned Tre Williams of Racine Park in 1:59 in the title match.

Craig coach Mark Mullen said his three champions performed well, but he was impressed with several of the younger Cougars who helped Craig overcome Bradford’s first-place lead going into the final round.

“Overall, the team did a very good job for our first tournament of year,” Mullen said. “We had to win our place matches to win the tournament and we did. Just about everyone came through in the final round.”

Craig returns to Big Eight Conference action when it hosts Madison West on Wednesday night.

Jimmy DuVal won the 182-pound class for Whitewater and teammate Aldo Soto was champion at 170. The Whippets’ Tyler Gamble won the 106-pound class.
