Early home runs were too much for Janesville Parker’s softball team to overcome Thursday.
Madison Memorial belted three homers and built a five-run lead before holding on to win 7-6 in a Big Eight Conference game at the Janesville Youth Sports Complex.
“We just got beat by the long ball tonight,” Parker coach Steve Heilman said. “Our bats just didn’t get going until the fourth or fifth inning. We got down 5-0 and fought back in it but just didn’t have enough innings left at the end.”
Isabella Curtin was the second batter of the game and blasted a two-run home run. It was the first of two home runs for her in the game.
Memorial added a run in the second and two more in the third to go up by five.
After the Vikings scored twice in the fourth, Lauren Schmitt hit a solo homer to make it 6-2, and Curtin’s solo shot in the sixth made it 7-2.
Parker senior Bri Garey belted a three-run home run of her own in the sixth to get the Vikings back within striking distance.
They scored once in the seventh and had a runner on first with two outs, but their rally was halted there.
Parker hosts unbeaten and No. 1-ranked Sun Prairie at the sports complex today.
