Janesville Craig’s softball team busted out the bats Thursday.
The Cougars combined for 29 runs and a pair of victories in a doubleheader against host Madison West. Craig won 13-0 and 16-1.
“The bats just came alive tonight,” Craig coach Dan Bayreuther said. “We had 34 hits. We had gone weeks without that many hits earlier this year.”
The first game started slow for both teams before Craig scored 13 runs in the final three innings.
Pitcher Katie Kealy allowed just one hit through six innings of play while striking out four. At the plate, Paige Peloquin went 3-for-3 with two doubles, a home run, and five RBI for the Cougars.
Game two started the opposite of the first, as Madison West scored in the top of the second inning to earn a 1-0 lead.
In response, Craig exploded for 11 runs in the bottom half of the second inning. The Cougars’ first eight batters all reached first base to start the inning off on a strong note.
“We haven’t had an inning like that all year,” Bayreuther said.
The success continued as the Cougars added another run in the third before scoring another four in the fourth to win 16-1 in five innings.
Seven different players had at least two hits. Morgan Oren led the way, going 3-for-4 with a double and four RBI. Starting pitcher Eden Lyle finished with five strikeouts and two walks through four innings.
“We have struggled with our hitting at times, but tonight we really broke loose,” Bayreuther said. “Hopefully that gave us some confidence.”
The Cougars will hope to use that confidence as they host Middleton today at 4:30 p.m.
