During a practice Wednesday, Elkhorn gymnastics coach Amanda Lockhart said her team’s goal for the state gymnastics meet was to move up from the fifth-place position the Elks had occupied in each of the state honor rolls this season.
The Elks scored 135.1667 points Friday to finish fourth during the WIAA Division 2 state team competition in Wisconsin Rapids. Whitefish Bay scored 141.7167 points to win its third straight state championship, followed by River Falls and Mount Horeb.
It’s the second-highest team finish in five state trips for Elkhorn, which took second in 2001.
Brianna Taylor was the top scorer for Elkhorn on the floor exercise (8.75) and uneven bars (8.883). Christa Jacobs led the Elks on the balance beam (8.867), while Cameron Jacobson had the team’s best vault score (8.6).
Several Elkhorn gymnasts—Jacobson (all-around), Taylor (balance beam, floor exercise), Rebecca Wheeler (uneven bars) and Marlie Lockhart (uneven bars)—will compete today during the Division 2 individual championships.
The Burlington co-op, featuring several Lake Geneva Badger gymnasts, scored 143.0667 points Friday to take third in the Division 1 team competition. Franklin (147.8333) secured its third consecutive title.
Lake Geneva Badger sophomore Regan Cassidy will be in action today during the Division 1 all-around.
